A battery tester delivers a verdict: good or replace. The problem is that what the tester shows isn't always what's actually happening. State of charge, temperature, how recently the battery was charged, the connections where you test, even the inputs you entered all shape the result. A passing battery might not explain why the customer's vehicle won't start reliably. A failing battery might point to something else entirely. That gap between the test result and vehicle performance is where unnecessary replacements happen and real problems get missed

A battery that tested fine six months ago isn't guaranteed to be healthy today. Battery condition changes between visits, and voltage alone doesn't provide a complete picture of health. Most shops only test batteries when they look old, have high mileage, or the customer complains about starting. That's exactly how weak batteries get missed until they fail on a customer's time. Testing every battery at every service visit removes the guesswork. It catches deterioration before it becomes a no-start, documents what the battery's condition actually was, and gives customers a chance to address problems while the vehicle is already in the shop.

A charging port fault on an EV requires treating the charging port area as a potential source of high-voltage exposure, regardless of whether the fault code looks minor. These faults can range from a failed latch and damaged pins to problems with insulation and arcing inside the port. How severe they actually are isn't obvious from the outside. Getting the diagnostic approach wrong is how shops end up with incidents and near-misses, and most of the time nobody expected the job to go sideways.

"It'll probably be fine" is the riskiest line in your shipping process.
Partial discharge. "Close enough" SoC. Eyeballing it instead of verifying it.

For lithium batteries headed out for air shipment, none of that holds up — discharging to a compliant state of charge isn't a best practice, it's a requirement.

Midtronics takes the guesswork out:
→ xPD-1K12 discharges packs to a preset target SoC — no guessing
→ xMB-9640 auto-discharges modules below 30% SoC to meet shipment regulations
→ Both monitor throughout, with auto-stop if readings leave safe limits

Full prep workflow in the graphic below.

An EV can look completely inactive while still being powered on and capable of movement. That's a problem technicians never had to think about before, and it changes how they determine whether a vehicle is safe to work on. In a busy shop where multiple people interact with the same vehicle throughout the day, that uncertainty adds risk. Visual mobility-status indicators give technicians an immediate way to recognize a vehicle's operating state, reducing confusion and supporting safer service procedures. As more EVs enter the aftermarket, clear status indication becomes another essential tool for consistent, confident repairs.

Electric vehicles have changed more than just what’s under the hood. They’ve also changed how technicians determine whether a vehicle is safe to work on.

Customers walk in expecting EV service to be quick because there are fewer moving parts. Then they're told the repair will take longer than it would on a gas vehicle. That's when the frustration starts. The reality is that EV repairs involve high-voltage safety procedures, advanced diagnostics, and software updates that have to happen before any work begins. Service advisors who explain this upfront transform a potential complaint into an opportunity to build trust. Customers are willing to wait longer when they understand why the additional time is necessary and what expertise is going into the repair.

Electric vehicles have fewer moving parts than internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, so many customers assume they’ll spend less time in the service

We had the opportunity to be featured on a recent episode of the Fire Apparatus podcast to discuss the growing challenges of EV rescue operations and how the Midtronics xIM EV Immobilizer is helping firefighters improve scene safety and responder confidence.

A big thank you to Fire Apparatus for covering this important topic and helping raise awareness about EV emergency response. We'd also like to thank our partner, Noble IQ, for joining us for the conversation. We had a great time sharing insights and discussing how the fire service can safely respond to the growing number of electric vehicles on the road.
