Parasitic loads keep consuming power, self-discharge happens naturally, temperature accelerates the problem, and an already weak battery deteriorates faster. The best maintenance strategy depends on storage duration, available charging infrastructure, and how soon the vehicle needs to return to active use. For dealerships managing seasonal inventory, fleets with parked equipment, and repair facilities holding vehicles, a proactive battery care routine prevents the scramble of dealing with dead batteries when stored vehicles are needed back in service.

Rideshare vehicles running ten-hour shifts and delivery fleets making dozens of stops place battery demands that personal vehicles never experience, creating a harsher operating environment and increasing the risk of early failure. Mileage tells only part of the story. Frequent starts, constant accessory use, communication equipment, and demanding duty cycles all stress the battery. The real factor is whether the charging system has enough time to replenish the energy being consumed. Regular battery testing can identify declining performance before a failure takes a revenue-producing vehicle out of service.

Intermittent starting issues are frustrating to diagnose. Customer arrives with a legitimate no-start from this morning. You test the battery and everything passes. You start it and the engine fires immediately. The gap between their experience and what your shop shows is where diagnosis breaks down. The battery recharged on the drive in. Temperature changed. A loose connection tightened up. That's why looking only at what's happening right now isn't enough. You need their history, the conditions that triggered it, what's happening when parked. That's how you solve intermittent battery problems instead of closing them as "could not duplicate."

A lot of shops think EV recovery is the same as towing a gas vehicle. They're wrong. Silent operation makes it impossible to tell whether an EV is actually shut down or still ready to move. The damage risk is real too. Wrong towing procedure, and you're looking at drive system damage or high-voltage battery compromise that turns a roadside pickup into a liability. Before your team hooks anything up, start with assessing the vehicle, preventing unintended movement and enforcing manufacturer safety processes before the EV is moved.

Your next EV battery is getting its own digital ID.

Starting February 2027, every EV, e-bike, and grid storage battery sold in the EU needs a passport, a full history you pull up with a QR scan. Midtronics is helping to create the the standards behind it, as part of the EU-funded BASE consortium.

Starting February 2027, EV batteries in the EU will have digital passports. Scan a QR code and you see its complete history: condition, accident damage, which modules have been replaced. For repair shops, that means no more guessing whether a battery is safe to handle or ship. For recyclers and second-life applications, it means actual data instead of assumptions about what the battery can still do. Midtronics is part of the BASE consortium building the technical standards behind this, working directly on how battery safety gets measured and verified.
