I turned 67 recently and am I ever feeling my age. As if everything didn't hurt enough, I took a nasty tumble in my garden last week. The x-rays didn't show anything broken, but I hurt as much as if I needed a body cast...

I'm down to a hobby level of business these days and I'm going to be working even slower for the next few weeks. So if you need something fast, it would be a good idea to talk to be before placing an order.

I have designed the replacement for the VR3 regulator and the VRREM7 regulator/Rectifier unit. I'm sending the first ones out to beta test and I hope to hear back soon. All the testing looks good here but I want to see how well they work out in the real world.

The replacement for the VR3, is the VR5 and the replacement for the VRREM7 is the VRREMX. I'm working to streamline all my regulator and regulator rectifier unit production and there will be price cuts.

The prices of my rectifiers will likely stay the same.

This economy is hurting all of us and I'm trying to do my part...

Since we're hanging on here... I will be redesigning some of my products. Some out of necessity and others to help cut prices. One of my suppliers has folded and another has jacked up their prices so high that it's not worth doing business with them anymore.

The most notable change will be my VR3 series regulators are going to be replaced with a new model, the VR5. The VR5's are going to be just as good as the old VR3's were but they won't be adjustable. However they will be around 20 bucks less expensive. II don't like to say cheaper because all my produces are high quality or I wouldn't bother making them...

Good news and bad news

The good news is there is finally a light at the end of the tunnel for my pain problems. As some of you know, I was rear-ended by a drunk while riding my Moto Guzzi back in 1983. The SOB hit me while I was moving going about 20 MPH faster than I was. The recovery was slow and over the past 12 or so years, I've lost a lot of ground. Anyway last week I had a series of spinal shots in my mid back and they really worked. I can now sit at the work bench and crank out few hours work with little pain. However the worst of the pain is in my low back and it's made walking more than very short distances impossible. I'm scheduled for another series of shots in my low back in about a month. I'm cautiously optimistic that these will work as well as the previous shots. Even if the work, I'll take me more than a year to regain my stamina...

Now getting to the bad news... I've maxed out my credit cards paying for all the co-pays. While I've moved a few parts in the last month, business has been awful.

I'm thinking seriously about shutting things down and renting out my shop space. Years ago I could count on OMP to keep the power on and heat in the shop. Gratefully the warmer weather here in NW Oregon has made working in the shop without heat possible but there was no heat in the shop all winter and I'm behind in all my utilities. I don't have the cash to order more supplies so I will be marking a lot of my products as "out of stock."

I could just keep the rectifier part of my business going in my office space and still rent out the shop. As of right now, that's looking like my best option. It's been a great run over these past 20 years...

What say you, am I still needed in the bike world?

I have been putting a lot of effort into the eMail system and I'm pretty sure it's all fixed now. Hopefully no more eMails bouncing or ending up in a black hole. I've changed the main contact eMail address to [email protected] since I've always been the only one answering them anyway. The old eMail addresses still get to me but I think the new one adds a more personal touch...

I just finished uploading the new version of the website. I had to switch web hosts so it won't go live until it's transferred form Yahoo to GoDaddy. I expect it will take 3 to 5 more days for this to happen. While I think I did a great job, I'm sure there are mistakes so if you guys could look it over for my screw ups, I'd really appreciate the effort... There's now also a mobile version and I'm hoping it will make it easier for more of you to browse my site...

About 2 years ago I helped a customer with a CBR1000F. His bike had a history of frying regulator rectifier units. Since it's basically the same type of charging system on the early CB750 (both SOHC and DOHC) coming up with a solution wasn't difficult. What I proposed and the customer agreed to was a separate regulator and rectifier.

The regulator mounts were the original reg/rec unit went and the rectifier mounts up font in the air stream. The guy with the CBR1000F said he mounted it in front of the radiator. I talked with him today and he said for the first time this bike has a stable charging system.

Once I get the hole spacing for the regulator mount, I'm going to make up a set and offer them for special order at first. The rectifier will require custom mounting and has 6' long wires. The rectifier will hard wire in with splices I'll send with it but since the load on the regulator is much lower, it'll come with a 3 prong plug attached and a splice kit to attach a pig tail to the main harness.

COVID has been hard on everyone and certainly has taken it's toll on me and Oregon Motorcycle parts. I got it before everyone knew what it was and the first half of last year was a blur. Much of the past year and a half OMP hasn't really been breaking even and I'm not sure if I can keep things going at this rate. I'm nearly $5k in the hole from operating expenses and I don't see how I can climb out by the end of the season.

I'm going to try selling off my bikes and other projects to see if I can raise enough capital but honestly, it's not looking good. If things keep going the way they are, I will have to find a way to downsize or close up shop.

I'm working on an all new Oregon Motorcycle Parts website. I hope it have it live by this Saturday but that might be a bit optimistic. A few pages will be discontinued and there will be at least one all new page. I'm splitting the diagnostic and tech articles off to their own page. It seems a lot of people don't think there will be diagnostic help on a FAQ page... The pages for discontinued part were the first to and maybe the bike pix page too... Right now I'm getting fuzzy vision from working on it so long so I'm going to give it a rest for at least most off today...

The company I use for web-hosting no longer supports the software I've been using so I have to completely rebuild the site using new software. So for at least the next couple weeks there will be no updates or changes to the OMP website.

The long over due supplies I've needed to make more VR3 series regulators and VRREM7 regulator/rectifier units has finally arrived.

I'm going to work on back orders for the VR3's first then I'll get to making more VRREM7's I expect to have the VR3 regulators back up for sale on the website be next Wednesday....
