One of the most common causes of fuel system problems isn't bad fuel.

It's neglected maintenance.

Fuel filters are designed to protect critical fuel system components from contaminants, water, and debris. But once they become overloaded, they can no longer do their job effectively.

We've seen plenty of trucks with performance issues, hard starting conditions, and fuel system concerns that could have been avoided with routine filter maintenance.

A quality fuel filter is cheap insurance compared to the cost of injectors, pumps, and major fuel system repairs.

The simplest maintenance items are often the most important.

Are you following the recommended fuel filter service intervals on your truck?

A USED DIESEL CAN RUN GREAT AND STILL BE HIDING AN EXPENSIVE PROBLEM.

That's exactly why a pre-purchase inspection matters.

When we inspect a truck before purchase, we're not just taking it around the block and checking whether it sounds good.

Our 97-point inspection covers the truck under the hood, underneath, and inside. We check brakes and tires, battery and charging system, starter and alternator operation, diagnostic trouble codes, boost leaks, lighting, and more.

For certain Power Stroke and Duramax LML trucks equipped with a CP4, we also recommend considering an additional inspection of the CP4 metering valve for signs of metal.

Why?

Because metal contamination can already be present while the truck still appears to run normally.

Once that turns into a complete fuel system problem, you're looking at a very different repair bill.

If you're considering buying a used diesel, have it properly inspected before you hand over the money.

Send Southern Diesel Supply a message to ask about a pre-purchase inspection.

A proper vehicle inspection isn't just about what's happening under the hood.

Every truck that comes into Southern Diesel Supply receives our 97-point Digital Vehicle Inspection, along with a separate intake inspection performed by our service advisor.

During intake, we document the vehicle's exterior condition, including existing scratches and damage.

This protects both the customer and our shop.

If we discover damage that wasn't there when the truck arrived, we have documentation to help determine what happened. And if we're responsible, we take ownership and make it right.

No unnecessary arguments. No guessing. Just proper documentation and accountability.

We also offer the same detailed inspection as a pre-purchase inspection for customers looking to buy a used diesel truck.

Whether you're bringing your truck in for repairs or considering buying one, knowing its condition matters.

Stop Throwing Parts at the Problem

A code pointing to a module doesn't automatically mean the module is bad.

We've seen this on L5P trucks with codes pointing toward the fuel pump control driver module. Yes, those modules can fail, but sometimes the actual problem is somewhere upstream in the wiring.

A damaged wire or harness issue can create the same symptom.

If you skip the diagnostic process and immediately replace the module, you may spend money on a part you didn't need, and still have the exact same problem afterward.

That's why we test before we replace.

Follow the circuit. Find the failure. Confirm the cause. Then make the repair.

You're not paying for a guess. You're paying for a result.

Do it right the first time.

How you use your truck changes how we prioritize what we find.

A set of older tires on a truck driven only a few times a year may be a lower priority. Put those same tires on a hotshot truck running every day, and they deserve a lot more attention.

That’s why understanding how you use your diesel is part of our inspection process.

When we find multiple issues, we can help separate what needs immediate attention from what can be monitored. A fuel leak, for example, moves up the list quickly because it wastes fuel, creates a safety concern, and could potentially lead to additional problems.

Finding the issue is only part of the job. Knowing what needs to be addressed first matters too.

Send Southern Diesel Supply a message if your truck needs to be inspected.

A Trouble Code Isn’t a Diagnosis

“We already scanned it. We know what part needs to be replaced.”

Not necessarily.

A trouble code tells us what the truck's computer detected. It doesn't automatically tell us what caused the problem.

For example, a code pointing toward an injector pigtail doesn't guarantee the pigtail itself has failed. The actual problem could be somewhere else in the circuit or wiring harness.

That's where proper diagnostics comes in.

Instead of replacing a part based on a code and hoping the problem disappears, we test the circuits, inspect the system, and work backward to find what actually caused that code to appear.

A scanner gives you a place to start.

Proper diagnostics finds the problem.

This is why diagnostic time matters.

The Training Never Stops

Being good at this craft means never assuming you already know everything.

Diesel technology keeps changing. New trucks bring new systems, new components, and new diagnostic and repair procedures. Our job is to keep learning with them.

Throughout the year, our technicians attend classes, use online training resources, and continue learning the latest systems and repair techniques. Our service advisors train too, because providing a better experience starts before the truck ever enters the bay.

Some of our guys are even knocking out training during their lunch breaks simply because they're hungry to learn.

That's the kind of mindset we want in this shop.

Knowledge makes us better technicians, better problem solvers, and ultimately better at taking care of the diesel owners who trust us with their trucks.

The training never stops because neither does the technology.

Cheap Maintenance. Expensive Consequences.

Fuel contamination doesn't only happen when someone puts the wrong thing in the tank.

Neglected fuel filters can create problems too.

Your fuel filters are there to catch water, sediment, and other contaminants before they make their way through the fuel system. And here in Florida, dirt and sand have a way of getting everywhere.

That's why we take fuel filter maintenance seriously.

We've seen contaminated fuel system repairs reach $16,000-$22,000 depending on the truck and the extent of the damage. Injectors alone can add up quickly, and they're only part of the repair.

Compare that to keeping up with your fuel filters.

Regular maintenance is cheap insurance compared to replacing an entire fuel system.

When was the last time you changed your fuel filters?
