We are closed today and tomorrow, so here is something for the weekend that costs nothing.

Walk around your car. Have somebody stand behind it while you press the brake, and check every light. Put a quarter upside down in the tread of all four tires. Look at the ground where you normally park for fresh drips. Squeeze each wiper blade and look for splits.

Ten minutes. Most weekends it tells you everything is fine, which is worth knowing too.

If it does not, we are open Monday at seven.

If your tires are wearing unevenly, the tires are almost never the problem. They are the evidence.

Wear on both outer edges usually means underinflation. Wear down the center usually means overinflation. Wear on one edge only points at alignment. Scalloped or cupped patches point at worn suspension.

That last one matters most, because worn shocks and struts wear tires unevenly and then the new tires do the same thing. People replace tires twice before anybody looks underneath.

Three different problems that all end with a car that will not go, and telling them apart saves real money.

A battery problem is usually worst when the car has been sitting. Slow crank in the morning, fine after a jump, dead again the next day.

An alternator problem shows up while driving. Lights dimming, a battery warning on the dash, or a car that dies shortly after a jump start because nothing is recharging.

A starter problem is a single loud click, or nothing at all, while the lights and radio work perfectly normally.

Everybody blames the cold. The cold is only the messenger.

Heat is what damages a battery, and Wichita just spent three months providing plenty. The damage sits quietly at reduced capacity all summer, because a warm engine is easy to turn over. Then the first genuinely cool morning arrives, cranking takes more, and the battery that was fine yesterday does nothing.

That is why no starts cluster into the same two weeks every fall.

Worth saying plainly, since people ask.

We are open Monday through Thursday, seven in the morning until six at night. Long days, four of them. Closed Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Those hours are deliberate. Opening at seven means you can drop a car before a shift instead of taking time off, and staying until six means you can collect it after one.

It has been there since 1982, and it was not decoration.

Electrical work is its own trade. A car that will not start sometimes but not always. A battery that keeps going flat overnight with nothing obviously drawing on it. Warning lights that come and go with no pattern anybody can find.

Those problems defeat a lot of shops because they do not follow the normal chain of symptom, code, part. They take a meter, a wiring diagram and patience.
