You could be DESTROYING your turbo by skipping this one thing

A turbocharger spins between 80,000 and 200,000 RPM.

It's cooled and lubricated entirely by engine oil.

The moment you shut the engine off, oil pressure drops, but the turbo keeps spinning on pure momentum with no lubrication.

That's called heat soak.

The residual heat cooks the oil sitting in the turbo bearing housing, leaving carbon deposits that wear the bearings down over time.

The fix is simple.

Let the engine idle for one to two minutes before shutting it off after any hard driving.

That gives the turbo time to slow down while oil pressure is still keeping it lubricated.

This applies to turbocharged engines only.

If your car is naturally aspirated, you can shut it off normally.

Blowouts are never just bad luck

They all happen for a reason.

Here's why:

The most common cause is underinflation.

When your tires are underinflated, the sidewall flexes too much, which generates heat.

This heat is what causes the blowout.

Not a nail, the road, or bad luck.

The second most common reason is overinflation.

When your tires have TOO MUCH air, only the middle of the tire touches the ground.

This makes it wear faster.

Make sure your tires stay at the right pressure, usually around 30-35 PSI.

Don't risk it.

DO NOT TOP OFF YOUR GAS TANK

If you keep filling up after the nozzle has already clicked, you're destroying your car.

Doing this causes liquid gasoline to go into the evap system.

This system is designed to handle fuel vapors, not straight gasoline.

Flooding it stops it from working correctly.

So next time you're at the gas station, DON'T TOP OFF.

Just fill it up until it clicks once.

If your car starts to overheat, here's exactly what you should do.

And what you shouldn't.

First, turn your heater on full blast.

It sounds backwards, but the heater actually pulls heat away from the engine.

Then, if the temperature keeps rising, pull over immediately.

If you keep driving, you risk blowing a head gasket, which is NOT an easy repair.

Finally, wait for your car to cool and check the coolant level.

If it's low, then top it off.

If it's fine, then you have a lot bigger problems.

We had a customer come in with a blown head gasket.

It didn't make any sense.

Their car was reading the perfect temperature.

It shouldn't have blown.

However, the reason revealed itself when we took a closer look.

It was low on coolant.

This made the temperature spike.

But why didn't it read hot?

Well the sensor is designed to read the coolant temperature.

Since it was low on coolant, the sensor was trying to read the air temperature, and giving a bad reading.

How do you avoid this?

By checking your coolant level at least once a month.

First, make sure your car is completely cooled down.

If your car is still hot, then pressurized coolant at 200 degrees will shoot at your face.

Then, locate the coolant reservoir.

Finally, check the level and fill it up so it's between the lines.

If it's constantly low, then there's a problem.

Don't forget to ask for this one thing the next time you're at the shop...

Whenever you get work done on your car, you should always ask for your old part back.

If a shop tells you a part is worn, it should show it.

If you get it back and it's perfectly fine, that's a huge red flag.

It's also proof they did the work.

If they refuse to show you the old part, then you should consider another shop.

We hand back parts all the time.

Next time you're getting your car worked on, just ask.

A good shop will respect you for it.

CVTs are COMPLETELY different than regular transmissions.

Here's how they work...

A CVT has zero gears.

None.

Instead, it either two pulleys or cones.

The pulleys have counterweights in them that increase/decrease depending on the speed of the engine.

This changes the gear ratio.

The cones work similarly, but instead of changing sizes they shift a steel belt to change the ratio.

This allows the engine to stay in it's most efficient RPM range.
