It’s always like Christmas when new items arrive for a project. Last week some lights for the 288 GTO front bumper arrived from Cairo. Yesterday an f40 pedal box and oil pan for the engine arrived from Italy. Later today I have a selection of parts arriving from Malta.

It’s a Global project!

A little pre-Dragon tweaking. I’ll go into more detail soon but after destroying the brakes on last May’s record run I am trying a more suitable setup to see if I can get a sub 10 minute time.

The last run with Zen (2013 JCW Roadster 270 hp) was with 215 45 17 RE71R Tires on stock 17 x 7 JCW wheels. Zimmerman rotors and EBC Redstuff pads, and fresh Motul 660 fluid.

Brakes started getting mushy on Thursday but come Sunday Morning when Steve Akers and I ran at 6 AM they held together only for the first of three runs. Run number two boiled them so badly that by run three they were useless the last three miles. Now part of that was my fault, overdriving the car but never the less better tires will help (and more judicious use of trail braking and less throttle in the turns).

I have a set of custom GP six piston calipers inbound but they won’t be here in time for this attempt. Titanium pad shields are being made to help block heat soak into the calipers. I am using stoptech slotted rotors and EBC Yellowstuff pads this time around and 17 x 7.5 wheels with 215 45 17 Yokohama Advan AD08R tires.

My hope is that the better rubber doesn’t get as greasy as the RE71R Bridgestone when heated up. That plus the wider rim should help stabilize tire deflection in the turns and make turn in quicker. If I can rotate while using less brake hopefully I can avoid boiling the fluid again. The slotted rotors will help pad out gassing during heavy braking and help wipe the pads preventing glazing. I’ll have to post images later of what that series of runs did to my poor Redstuff pads.

Those mods alone should be enough to save the brakes. I’ll add a little more camber in front too as the outside edge, of the front tires really saw extreme wear.

Tomorrow I will attack the front rotors and pads and after do a complete brake system flush.

Stay tuned.

If you want an easier to read dip stick for you MINI I have the Promotion still running on our site. Billet aluminum handle, stainless steel probe and shaft. The holes in the probe make it easier to read than factory.
