Electrons are lazy. They follow the path of least resistance. If that path happens to be through oil or water that has leaked onto the spark plugs, the tendency will be for that electron to not find its way through the spark plug and into the combustion chamber, but rather down the outside of the plug and to ground. If the spark doesn't happen inside the cylinder, the air/fuel mixture cannot be burned and a misfire occurs.

This one is a perfect example of just that. Oil and water have submerged three of the four spark plugs. The check engine light is on and the engine runs rough. The fix here is to clean the oil and water. Repair the cause of then water and oil intrusion, and then replace the damaged ignition components.

Four spark plugs, one coil assembly, a new cam cover gasket, and this thing will be back on the road warning light free.

Torque wrenches can either be mechanical, or electronic. They range in size from large to small.

Small torque wrenches handle the delicate stuff
Medium torque wrenches are the every day work horse
Large torque wrenches are for things that require more torque to be applied, like lug nuts, and axle nuts.
Extra large torque wrenches are used when fasteners need to be extremely tight, and brought there in a precise manner. Such as the bolt holding the crankshaft balancer to your engine, or some heavy duty suspension components.

A torque wrench is a device used to accurately measure torque without relying on gravity to pull a free weight in a downward direction. It can be set a a particular torque value, and will count up from zero, to the specified torque. When the desired torque is achieved, the torque wrench will alert the user with a visual, audible, and even a tactile notification.

There are lights on the side of the wrench that change from yellow to green as the torque value is reached. The handle will vibrate, and there is an audible beep noise produced along with the actual torque value being displayed on the screen. Tools like this allow us to ensure that nuts, bolts, and other components are installed just as the manufacturer designed to keep you car working the way it should.

Torque specifications are used on fasteners to ensure that they are tight enough to have adequate clamping force, but not so much force that damage to components occurs. Torque on fasteners is commonly measured in "foot pounds."

What is a foot pound. If you use a one foot long ratchet, and apply ten pounds of force to it, that would be 10 foot pounds of torque. 10 lb-ft. Due to the configuration of modern day vehicles, utilizing a set of free weights and a ruler is not always possible. There simply is not enough clearance to do so...and it could require turning you car upside down to allow gravity to pull on the weight...the torque wrench now enters the chat
