RVs: Riding the Highs and Lows of an Unpredictable Journey
Life has a funny way of throwing curveballs, doesnโt it? One minute, youโre living the high life, the next, youโre wondering what just happened. Itโs kind of like the journey of the recreational vehicle (RV) industry. A few years back, the RV lifestyle was the toast of the town, but now, it seems like the partyโs over. How did we get here, and where do we go from here? Letโs hit the open road and take a trip down memory lane.
Once upon a time, after the global financial crisis of 2008, the RV industry was on a roll. The economic recovery brought folks back to the joys of road trips, outdoor adventures, and the freedom of a home on wheels. RV shipments surged from 2009 to 2017, only to flag as the economic expansion began to cool off.
Then, enter the unexpected guest: the global pandemic. With travel restrictions making airlines and cruises less viable, folks turned to RVs. Cooped up for months, people found the freedom and fun of RV holidays irresistible. The ability to hit the road, explore the great outdoors, and stay safe was a perfect combo. 2020 saw a 6% year-over-year increase in RV shipments, on par with the third-best annual shipment on record.
The pandemic sun kept shining on the RV industry in 2021. People began enjoying an active outdoor lifestyle with their loved ones, and the RV culture saw a boost. In 2021, RV shipments hit an all-time high of 600,240 wholesale shipments, breaking the 2017 record.
But, as we all know, all good things must come to an end. After setting a record in March 2022, RV shipments have been witnessing a decline. By November, shipments had fallen 50.4% year over year. RV industryโs fortune-tellers like Winnebago and Thor reported a decline in revenues and earnings in the first quarter of fiscal 2023.
As we head into 2023, the road for the RV industry seems a bit bumpy. Rising interest rates and economic uncertainty are taking a toll. Higher interest rates mean higher costs of financing, and customers might think twice before taking on high-interest rate debt to finance their next RV purchase.
The RV Industry Association forecasts a more than 20% decline in RV shipments for 2023, compared to 2022 levels. But as we all know, life and the RV industry are unpredictable. How long will this downturn last? Thatโs anybodyโs guess.
But hey, the RV lifestyle is all about embracing the unexpected, right? At Advanced RV, weโre here to support your RV dreams, no matter the economic weather. From body shop services to parts, propane, sales, and storage, weโve got you covered.
