πβ‘ DID YOU KNOW? MOST ELECTRIC VEHICLES STILL HAVE A 12-VOLT BATTERY! π
Many people assume that because an electric vehicle (EV) runs on a large high-voltage battery, it doesnβt have a traditional 12V battery. Thatβs a common misconception!
β‘ EVs typically have TWO separate electrical systems:
π 1. The High-Voltage Battery
This is the large battery pack that powers the electric motors and moves the vehicle.
π 2. The 12-Volt Battery
Just like in many gas-powered vehicles, this smaller battery helps power essential systems, including:
β
Door locks and keyless entry
β
Dashboard displays and vehicle computers
β
Interior and exterior lighting
β
Electronic controls and safety systems
β
Systems needed to activate the vehicleβs high-voltage system
π¨ WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE 12V BATTERY DIES?
Even if your EVβs main battery is fully charged, a failed or discharged low-voltage battery can prevent the vehicle from powering up or becoming ready to drive.
That means you could have plenty of driving range left but still find yourself unable to start your vehicle!
π§ CAN AN EVβS 12V BATTERY BE JUMP-STARTED?
In many cases, yes! However, the correct procedure varies by make and model. Always follow the manufacturerβs instructions. Never attempt to jump-start or service an EVβs high-voltage battery.
β οΈ IMPORTANT: Not every EV uses a conventional 12V battery. Some newer models use a 48V low-voltage system, so always verify the vehicleβs specifications before attempting service.
π£ THE BOTTOM LINE: Electric vehicles still need reliable low-voltage electrical power, and the low-voltage battery can be just as important when youβre stranded.
