🏁 UNITY RACE WEEKEND RECAP
Oh gross… what’s that smell?
Is it Troy’s performance that stinks?
Take it easy, guys. It’s just a skunk wandering around outside turn one.
…No, really. It was. 😂
And to be fair, we’ve actually been getting faster every time we go there.
After the long journey north—over rivers, past lakes, and approximately 50 Dunkin’ Donuts—we finally arrived at the Unity Race Way, The Rebuild LLC gor our race with SCoNE - Sprint Cars of New England.
Wait… did we miss our exit? How far north DID we go?
Is that Santa?!
Nope. Just Bob Kilborne, AKA Santa Bob, of Kilburn Motor Sports handing out goodies to the kiddos.
We hit the track for hot laps and showed some pretty good speed. Unfortunately, that speed stayed back at the trailer for the heat race, which put us starting near the tail for the feature.
We were settled in and starting to click a few cars off when we got dumped in turn three.
Bob probably put him on the naughty list. He’ll probably get a crate motor or something equally terrible in his stocking this year.
Two other cars got collected, and about 20 gallons of methanol issued forth from my ripped-open fuel cell, flowing across the track like one of the many babbling little brooks tucked away in the peaceful Maine woods.
After a nice ride in the wrecker back to the pits, there we were again:
Race car on jack stands.
Now, some people might say we’re stupid. Others might say we’re crazy.
I prefer to say we’re persistent with a never-give-up attitude.
There’s probably a pretty fine line between the three.
Anyway…
We borrowed a fuel cell from William Hull, the Budz and Sudz team helped and the Herbert Racing crew donated some fuel because apparently we hadn’t brought enough methanol to both create a small tributary AND run two nights of racing.
So Saturday we rolled back out looking a little worse for wear.
And somehow…
WE WON THE HEAT RACE. 🎉🎉🎉
Even with the front of the race car frame looking like Princess Vespa from Spaceballs pre-nose job.
We followed that up with a 6th-place finish in the feature after another wild race that claimed two more race cars.
So, looking at the final scoreboard for the weekend:
FINAL SCORE:
UNITY RACEWAY:
Junk frame
Junk tail tank
Junk front axle
Junk radius rods
Junk nose wing
Half-junk top wing
TROY:
1 heat race win 🎉🎉🎉
I’m calling it a draw.
On paper, you’d probably assume I don’t like this place very much.
But I’m a sucker for campfires, Miller Lites, and good company. Huge thank you to Joey Doyon and Holly Doyon for creating an atmosphere at their racetrack that somehow makes it easy to forget your race car is basically a scrap heap sitting on jack stands.
We had an absolute blast visiting with friends and family, laughing around the campfire, racing cars, and not sleeping nearly enough.
Now it’s time to gather up the remaining pieces and limp our way back to Bear Ridge to finish out the season.
Goonies never say die. 🏁
