Why I love detailing automobiles.
I’ve been into cars for over 50 years. It started in the 70s. My dad was a City of Dallas employee so, any event in the Dallas Convention Center was free to attend. He would take us to the Dallas Autorama every year. That really opened my eyes to see prototypes of future car designs, and what the big brands were offering for the next model year. There would be iconic cars from popular TV shows and movies like the original Batmobile, the coach from the Munsters, Don Garlits’ dragsters, to name a few. I could name the year/make of any car coming down the road. My dad would make a game of it by asking me, “What’s that one son?”
Then, I discovered model car kits. Since I couldn’t have a real car, I could build the model of it! That is what most of my allowance went to.
My first car was a Pontiac with an engine my uncle had built. We lived in a rural area so, I washed it two times per week because I couldn’t stand to see a layer of dust on it. I had three uncles and whenever they would visit us, I was always amazed at how clean their cars were—inside and out. Having that Pontiac also got me interested in repairing and maintaining my own cars. We had one mechanic in town who was always backed up for weeks. I rebuilt the engine in that Pontiac and later, rebuilt a 300 6-cylinder in a Ford truck we had.
Today, cars are so expensive I can’t imagine not taking the best care of them possible. Regular oil/fluids changing, tire rotations, alignments, etc. That should include keeping it clean inside and out. If your vehicle is clean, you will enjoy being in it more. If its appearance is maintained you just might hold onto it longer and that could save you thousands or tens of thousands of dollars by not trading it in!
