Good morning fellow RC hobby enthusiasts, Friday January 10, 2025. Matt here, owner/manager of Wicked Pines RC Scale Model Club. This has been weighing on my mind for a couple months now, and we know word is getting around, so today we have made the tough decision to cancel our 2025 race events and the track will be closed to the public until further notice.
As many of you already know we received yet another letter from Wayland Township notifying us that even though we are a club they feel we are doing full on commercial activities and we are in violation of home based business zoning requirements, citing specifically outdoor activities, traffic, noise and waste. Our only remedy according to them is to appeal the zoning requirements for home based businesses to allow outdoor activities, then if allowed file and pay for special use permits for each event. In order to appeal the board to change the zoning it will cost $1600 application fee and they have the right to simply vote it down with nothing in return. We can't help but think their findings are construed because we have gone through considerable efforts to not only ensure the property and each event causes no obstruction to anyone or thing surrounding us but have ensured our immediate neighbors are in favor and undisturbed by our existence. I have to say our neighbors have been outstanding and we see them here watching at nearly every event. We can't thank them enough for their support.
Sadly this isn't something we can ignore or fight without significant funds to hire attorneys and pay other legal fees. We haven't decided yet weather or not it's worth investing more into fighting a loosing battle or picking up and moving everything to another location. There are major logistical and labor factors to contemplate. This track has been a dream of mine for quite a long time, our first full "season", as they quoted, was so amazing. I think we created a great family friendly racing atmosphere. I want to thank everyone who came out to race, spectate, help build and maintain our track so we could have a spot to come have some fun in the sun. We are NOT GIVING UP, I promise, this is simply a bump in the road. If anyone has an issue with this we suggest you take it up with Wayland Township at one of their bi-weekly township hall meetings or the phone number or email on the letter.
I appreciate everyone's understanding and will post up news as we go. Onto some happy news my wife and I are about to have our first child and we are looking forward to that! My little girl is gonna be out here whippin up on all you fast guys before you know it!!
Thanks again everyone and happy new year.
