The Dodge Magnum..a late 70's Muscle Car!

The Magnum is one of those cars Mopar guys still split on. Some see a late 70s personal luxury coupe and keep walking. Others see the last time Dodge still slipped real cubic inches into a car like this and understand exactly why it matters.

For 1978, Dodge introduced the Magnum as its new personal luxury coupe on the B body platform. It came with its own sheetmetal, those clear covered headlamps, and the usual comfort stuff buyers expected in that era. Underneath, though, you could still order real V8 power all the way up to a 400. Every Magnum used the TorqueFlite automatic, and in 1979 the 400 was gone because Chrysler dropped the big block from its passenger cars. That makes a 1978 Magnum 400 a very specific kind of Mopar. It is one of the last chances to get a new Dodge coupe with a factory big block, even if the car itself lived in the personal luxury world instead of the pure muscle car one.

That is why these cars deserve more respect than they usually get. No, a Magnum was not a 1969 Super Bee. Nobody honest should pretend it was. But Dodge was still trying to sell style, comfort, and one last shot of displacement in the same package. That is exactly why some people love them and some people refuse to count them. And honestly, that argument is probably why the Magnum still gets remembered at all.
