BEAVERS DON’T WAIT FOR ICE. 🦫❄️
And your engine shouldn’t wait for winter to think about coolant.
If you’re new to car care, here’s the simple version:
Your engine makes a tremendous amount of heat. Coolant carries that heat away and also helps protect the cooling system from freezing and corrosion.
When the cooling system can’t do its job, the engine can overheat. Continuing to drive an overheating vehicle can turn a manageable cooling-system problem into serious engine damage, including head-gasket or cylinder-head damage.
So what should you know?
💧 Check the coolant level only when the engine is completely cold.
The reservoir should have MIN/MAX or LOW/FULL markings.
🔥 NEVER open a radiator or pressurized coolant cap on a hot engine.
Hot cooling systems are under pressure. Removing the cap can release scalding coolant and steam and cause severe burns. If the vehicle has been running hot, shut it off safely and let it cool completely.
🌡️ Watch the temperature gauge.
If it suddenly climbs toward HOT or you see an overheating warning, don’t keep driving and hope it fixes itself.
👀 Watch for clues.
A sweet smell, puddles under the vehicle, dried crusty residue, repeated low coolant, or the heater suddenly blowing cold while the engine runs hot can all deserve attention.
❄️ Coolant type matters.
Different vehicles require different formulations. Don’t choose coolant by color alone. Use the manufacturer-specified type.
🐾 And keep coolant away from children and animals. Antifreeze can be poisonous if swallowed.
If you checked your coolant, noticed something unusual, or simply have no idea what you’re looking at, that’s okay. You’re already doing the right thing by paying attention.
