2020 Jeep Cherokee 2.4L — Airbag Warning Light

This Cherokee came in with the airbag warning light illuminated and the following faults stored:

• U11F0-00 — Lost Communication With Left Front Impact Pressure Sensor
• B2767-11 — Left Impact Pressure Sensor Circuit Short to Ground

The vehicle had already been back to the dealership multiple times for the same concern. During the most recent visit, the dashboard was removed and the Occupant Restraint Controller/Restraint Control Module was replaced.

Unfortunately, the fault returned the same day the customer picked the vehicle up.

Rather than replacing more parts, we went back to the circuit.

The ORC monitors the impact/pressure sensor and its wiring for circuit integrity. With B2767-11 setting, we needed to determine whether the problem was the sensor itself, the wiring, or a connection somewhere between the sensor and the ORC.

We first identified the affected circuits and verified circuit continuity between the impact sensor and the ORC.

Continuity checked good, but continuity alone does not prove that a circuit can actually carry current.

We then load-tested the affected circuit by applying power and ground from the ORC side and loading the circuit at the sensor location.

The circuit failed the load test.

That told us there was excessive resistance somewhere in the wiring or connections, so we continued disassembly and inspection of the circuit.

The problem was eventually located at connector Y601A near the driver-side A-pillar.

Corrosion had created a salt bridge inside the connector, compromising the connection and causing the intermittent airbag system faults.

Because the complete door harness and connector were unavailable, we repaired the damaged terminals and repaired the body/sealing area to help prevent moisture and road salt from getting back into the connection.

The vehicle was reassembled, faults cleared, and the system retested before being released back to the customer.

This is a good example of why checking resistance or continuity alone isn't always enough.

A circuit can look perfectly fine on an ohmmeter and still fail the moment it's asked to carry a load.

Happy Labor Day! Labor Day is an annual celebration of workers and their achievements, originated at a time when American industry was rapidly expanding but there were few legal protections for American workers (Encyclopedia Britannica).

In September of 1882, 10,000 workers took unpaid time off from work to march to Union Square in New York City, creating the first Labor Day parade in US history. Labor Day wasn’t declared a national holiday until 1894, but this wasn’t the start of the Worker’s Rights Movement or the fight for labor laws.

Take a moment to appreciate those who fought for the 8-hour workday, the end to child labor, and the Unions and legal protections we have at our places of employment today. Enjoy this time off work with your family and friends.

❓How do you make your tires last?

🛞 Let's start with tire rotation. In your normal driving, your front tires wear more on the shoulders because they handle much of the cornering forces in turns. Front-wheel drive vehicles have even more force on the front tires.

We rotate the tires so that all of the tires do some duty on the front end as well as getting a little break on the back end. That way, all four tires wear more evenly over their life and last longer.

For most vehicles, tires are rotated front to back. Some manufacturers recommend a cross rotational pattern that includes the spare tire, and some high-performance vehicles have strict rules about which tires fit where. Your service advisor at Petty Motorworks can help you sort that out and will perform the right tire rotation for your vehicle.

Your tire manufacturer will have a recommendation for how often you should rotate your tires.

🛞 Let's move on to wheel balancing. That's when there are heavy spots on the tire and wheel that cause it to wobble.

Balancing adds weights to the wheel to balance it out. Now, we are talking about very small weight differences. Variations in the tire and wheel manufacture can cause a slight imbalance. The valve stem, and now the tire pressure monitoring sensors in the tire, also play into the equation.

Even small differences can cause annoying vibrations at speed: the wheel is essentially bouncing a bit as it goes down the road. For example, at freeway speeds, an out of balance wheel can be slamming into the road 14 times a second. That's annoying and can cause your tires to wear out more quickly.

If a front wheel's out of balance you'll feel the vibration through the steering wheel. When it's a rear tire, you'll feel the vibration through your seat. If you're getting bad vibes from your vehicle, bring it in to see if it's a balance issue or something else. You should balance your wheels whenever you get a new tire or remount a tire like when it's been removed for a flat repair.

At Petty Motorworks, we are a proud Continental and General Tire dealer, and have access to any other tire brand you might need. One question we often get asked is: When is it time to replace my tires?

The lifespan of a tire depends on a combination of influences including: the driver's driving habits, climate, road conditions, tire design, and proper tire maintenance.

The big three things to consider are:

🛞 Tread Wear - Proper tread depth is essential to prevent hydroplaning and skidding. The minimum tread depth is 2/32" of an inch (1.6 mm).
Some Continental tires are equipped with a DWS molded into the tire tread which indicates when the tire's tread has worn. When the S is worn away, the tire is no longer optimal in snow. When the W is worn away, the tire is no longer optimal in wet. And when the D is worn away, the tire is no longer • optimal in the dry and the tire should be replaced.

If your tires don't include DWS, you can use a penny to check tread depth. Simply place the penny upside down into a tread groove. If you can see all of Lincoln's head, it's time for a new tire.

🛞 Climate - Too much exposure to direct sunlight, UV rays, and/or heat, can cause cracking in your tires. If the vehicle is parked outside in the elements, and is not driven frequently, this can accelerate the process. Extreme cold can also factor into tire wear.

🛞 Tire Age - Tires are designed and built to provide many thousands of miles of excellent service. For maximum benefit, tires must be maintained properly. The service life of a tire is a cumulative function of the storage, rotation, and service conditions, which a tire is subjected to throughout its life (load, speed, inflation pressure, road hazard injury, etc.).

⭐️ Continental Tire recommends that you regularly inspect your tires. An inspection of the tires should be incorporated during routine vehicle maintenance procedures. If tire damage is suspected or found, it should be carefully assessed by a trained tire specialist immediately.
