Low-Voltage Faults Everywhere—and One Look at the Battery Explained Why
This 2017 Ford Escape equipped with a four-cylinder EcoBoost came in with multiple warning indicators illuminated, including the ABS light, traction-control light, check-engine light, and battery light.
A full-system scan showed low-voltage faults throughout multiple modules.
Rather than chasing each warning light and fault individually, we started by checking the vehicle’s electrical foundation.
Because the battery is tucked beneath the cowl area, we could not initially test directly at the battery terminals. Measuring between the positive connection at the underhood fuse box and the ground connection at the left-front strut tower showed only about 10 volts—a loss of roughly two volts.
We removed the air box, disassembled the battery tray, and slid the battery out.
This is what we found.
The negative battery terminal and battery-management-system sensor were completely buried in corrosion. The corrosion was so severe that it destroyed the BMS sensor connector and migrated into the wiring. This required replacement of the damaged battery-cable sensor-end connector, not simply cleaning the terminal.
The unfortunate part is that this was easily preventable.
This Escape is not a regular customer’s vehicle, and corrosion this severe did not happen overnight. Had the vehicle been routinely inspected by a qualified technician, the customer should have been notified long before the corrosion caused this level of damage.
At our shop, routine service is more than changing the oil and installing a filter. We photograph developing problems—even during basic maintenance—so our customers can see exactly what we see and address concerns before a minor issue becomes an expensive repair.
Modern vehicles depend on stable system voltage for nearly every module on the network. One neglected battery connection can create low-voltage faults everywhere and illuminate warning lights for systems that may not have anything wrong with them.
