Why Paint Matching Is More Complicated Than It Looks

šŸŽØšŸš— Just find the paint code and spray itā€¦right? Not quite!

Matching automotive paint can involve much more than simply looking up a color code.

Color and finish can have variations, and the paint already on your vehicle has lived through sunshine, weather and everyday driving.

The goal isnā€™t just to find a color thatā€™s ā€œclose.ā€ The refinishing process is about making the repaired area blend naturally with the rest of the vehicle.

When you look at the finished vehicle and canā€™t easily tell which panel was repairedā€”thatā€™s the point.

Why Can an Estimate Change?

šŸ’µāž”ļøšŸ”§ ā€œWhy did my repair estimate change?ā€

Itā€™s a question collision shops hearā€”and thereā€™s a good reason it can happen.

An initial estimate is based largely on what can be seen and assessed before the vehicle is taken apart. Once damaged components are removed, technicians may discover additional repairs or parts that are needed.

Think of it like opening up a wall during a home renovationā€”you simply canā€™t see everything from the outside.

When additional collision damage is discovered, the repair plan may need to be updated to account for it.

How long does a collision repair take?

Itā€™s one of the first questions we hear after an accidentā€”and the answer is: it depends on the repair.

Several things can affect the timeline:
šŸ”§ The extent of the damage
šŸ“¦ Parts availability
šŸ“ Insurance approvals
šŸ› ļø The repairs and refinishing needed

A smaller repair may only take a few days, while more extensive damage can take several weeks. At Lake Area Collision, our goal is to keep you informed throughout the process while making sure the job is done rightā€”not just fast.

Been in an accident? Let our team take a look and help you understand what to expect from start to finish.

What Does ā€œHidden Damageā€ Mean?

šŸ‘€šŸ’„ The damage you SEE isnā€™t always the damage thatā€™s THERE.

After a collision, a bumper might look scratched or dented on the outsideā€”but once itā€™s removed, additional damage may be discovered underneath.

Brackets, reinforcement components, sensors, mounting points and other parts can potentially be affected even when the exterior damage doesnā€™t look severe.

Thatā€™s what we mean when we talk about hidden damage.

Itā€™s also one reason a thorough collision repair is about much more than making your vehicle look good again.
