The Maryland Auto Insurance Fund (MAIF) has certified an operating loss for 2026 and requires an insufficiency assessment. All insurers must pay their share of the assessment, equal to their market share percentage, by June 30, 2026. The law allows insurers to recoup the assessment from policyholders.

Beginning July 1, 2026, new and renewal Auto, Motorcycle and Recreational vehicle policyholders will see a new line item on the bill marked Recoupment of MAIF Assessment, $_______.

The assessment is approximately equal to 0.089% of the policyholder’s premium. This charge will appear on all Auto, Motorcycle and Recreational vehicle policies with effective dates from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2027.

As an insurance agent, I spend a lot of time talking about protecting homes, cars, and businesses—but protecting your financial identity is just as important.

Credit card skimming is a type of fraud where criminals install small devices on card readers at gas pumps, ATMs, or point-of-sale terminals to steal your card information. Often, victims don’t realize anything is wrong until unauthorized charges appear days or weeks later.

A few tips I regularly share with clients:

Contactless payments when possible

Inspect card readers for loose parts or tampering

Monitor your bank and credit card statements closely

Report suspicious charges immediately

While insurance can help with certain identity theft and fraud-related expenses, prevention is always your first line of defense.

🚨Card Skimming Device Discovered at Waldorf 7-Eleven🚨

The Charles County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after officers recovered a card skimming device attached to a point-of-sale terminal at the 7-Eleven on St. Ignatius Drive on January 21.

The device was an overlay skimmer, designed to fit over a legitimate card reader and closely mimic the original terminal while unlawfully capturing card information during transactions.

How to protect yourself:
✅Before using a card reader or keypad, gently check it. If it appears loose, bulky, or unusual, do not use it and notify store staff.
✅If you recently made purchases at this location, review your bank and credit card statements for any unauthorized charges.
✅Report suspicious activity to the Charles County Sheriff’s Office.

Remaining alert and taking a few extra seconds at the register can help safeguard your personal and financial information.

FinanceBuzz compared the current prices of popular breakfast items at major fast-food chains to what they cost five years ago to find where inflation has had the biggest and smallest impact.
Here’s what we found:
𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗳𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟵-𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰
To determine how prices have increased, we reviewed breakfast menus from 10 national fast-food chains and compared the costs of four of the most popular items at each chain today vs. 5 years ago (2019).
Across those menu items, we found that prices increased by an average of 53%, more than double the national rate of inflation (23%) in that same time frame.
Costs have risen the most at Taco Bell and Hardee’s/Carl’s Jr., as both chains have upped prices on their morning menus by 72% in the last five years. Additionally, Jack in the Box (64% increase) and Dunkin’ (63%) both increased prices at a rate 10 points higher than average.
On the other end, Starbucks increased breakfast menu prices at the lowest rate of any chain, increasing them by just 32% in the last half-decade. Subway came close to matching the coffee-slinging chain, as prices for its breakfast menu only increased by 37% on average.
One other chain — Burger King (41%) — also raised prices by less than 50% between 2019 and 2024.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than 80,000 people who drive as part of their job were injured in 2023, and there were 843 fatalities. According to the BLS, operating a commercial vehicle is one of the top 10 most dangerous jobs in the United States.

The survey asked professional drivers, and passenger car drivers, about behavior they engaged in as well as what they witnessed while behind the wheel.
