Waco has plenty of vehicles changing hands this time of year, and an hour on a lift is the cheapest money you will ever spend on one.

An inspection tells you what a test drive cannot. Whether it has been in a collision. Whether there are active leaks. How much brake and tire life genuinely remains, which is often a thousand dollars hiding inside the asking price. And whether trouble codes were cleared recently, which looks identical to no codes at all on a quick scan.

A seller who will not allow an inspection has told you something. Believe them.

Sometimes the repair is real, it is now, and the timing is terrible. Cars do not break on payday.

We have financing available for exactly that situation, because the alternatives people fall back on are worse. Driving on something unsafe with family in the vehicle, or losing the way you get to work, which costs a great deal more than any repair.

Grinding is past the warning. Metal on metal, and the rotors are involved now too.

A pedal that feels soft or slowly sinks under steady pressure is the urgent one, because that points at the hydraulic side.

Two things genuinely worth doing while you are thinking about it.

Have your battery tested, for the reason we talked about last week. Heat did the damage, cold will deliver the news.

And check your wipers, which have spent a summer baking in the sun and will quit the first time a real storm rolls through. In Central Texas that tends to happen without much warning.

If you are one of them, two minutes before you head home. Check your tire pressure, which has probably dropped since you set it in the summer. Check that all your lights work, since you may be driving back after dark. And glance under where you parked for anything fresh.

Heat degrades the fluid. Degraded fluid stops protecting the clutch material. Slipping clutches generate more heat. The loop accelerates until it does not.

Waco in September, sitting in traffic on the frontage road with the air conditioning running, is exactly how that loop gets fed. Towing anything makes it worse.

Warning signs: shifts that flare, a shudder at light throttle, fluid gone dark or smelling burnt, a vehicle that feels fine cold and lazy after an hour.

If you let go of the wheel on a flat straight stretch and the car drifts, that is alignment, and it is quietly eating your tires every single mile.

It goes out from completely ordinary things. Potholes, curbs, construction on the frontage roads, and the general condition of Texas pavement after a brutal summer.

A set of tires that should give you fifty thousand miles can be finished at twenty five if it is far enough out.

You cannot look at the car. You cannot tell whether the shop they walked into is being straight with them. And a nineteen year old is not always going to ask the right questions.

Everybody blames the cold. The cold is only the messenger.

Heat is what damages a battery, and Central Texas just spent four months providing an unusual amount of it. The damage sits quietly at reduced capacity all summer, because a warm engine turns over easily. Then the first genuinely cool morning arrives, cranking takes more, and the battery that was fine yesterday does nothing.

That is why no starts cluster into the same two weeks every fall.

Worth saying plainly, because our own website has never made it clear enough.

We do diesel. Diagnostics, engine work, cooling, fuel systems and the maintenance that keeps a work truck earning.

Waco sits on I-35 with contractors, ranch trucks and haulers running through it constantly, and a lot of those owners drive out of town for diesel work without realizing there is a shop on Sanger Avenue that handles it.
