Corliss Driving School

Corliss Driving School Corliss Driving School offers both teen and adult driver education and training. Mr. When California dropped the high school driving program, Mr.

Our Driving School was started in 1994 when the California School system dropped free Drivers Training from the public high schools. As a teacher and coach in Visalia Unified since 1974, Bill Corliss has been dedicated for more than 30 years to teaching local students to drive. Corliss taught Drivers Ed and Drivers Training at Golden West High School, coordinated Drivers Training for VUSD and was

actively involved in CASE, the statewide driving association. He also holds a specialist college degree and credential in teaching driving and has taught driving classes for AAA and the California State University system. Corliss saw a pressing need to start a driving school that would provide highly trained and college-educated instructors for the local students. (Although all Driving Schools must use licensed instructors, the requirements are very minimal!)

Our Driving School is a true family business: with Bill providing the driving expertise, wife Pam working behind-the-scenes as the CFO and and daughters Cristin and Carli serving as DMV Licensed Instructors. Corliss Driving School offers both teen and adult driver education and training: Driver Education, Behind-the-Wheel Drivers Training, DMV drive test lessons, senior citizen assessments and evaluations, and DASH Therapy (physical and cognitive assessments requested by DMV or a medical doctor).

Continuing to make our school & program better for our clients is a great priority at Corliss Driving School. Pam & Kristina went to Driving Schools Assoc. of the Americas conference in Santa Ana this year bringing home some new perspectives and wonderful teaching points for us to pass along to our instructors.
DSAA does a good job at entertaining while teaching. So a little dress-up (since it was close to Halloween) and Loteria game on Taco Tuesday kept everyone engaged.

Once tweens or teens graduate to seat belts, remind them of proper use. Don’t let kids put the shoulder belt behind their back or under an arm, where it provides no protection at all. Make sure children ride restrained in back at least through age 12.

Children at this stage are not yet ready for adult safety belts and should use belt-positioning booster seats until they are at least 4’9″ and between 8 and 12 years old. Safety belts are designed for 165-pound male adults, so it’s no wonder that research shows poorly fitting adult belts can injure children.

Thousands of children are injured or killed every year because their child passenger safety seats are not installed properly. Remember, most collisions occur within a mile of the home - so buckle your child in a safety seat for every trip, no matter how short. https://www.chp.ca.gov/Programs-Services/Programs/Child-Safety-Seats

Have children? Every year, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration celebrates Child Passenger Safety Week, this year it's September 21-27, 2025. Check with your local CHP to see if your child's car-seat is properly installed. https://www.nhtsa.gov/vehicle-safety/car-seats-and-booster-seats -help-inspection

Why does Corliss Driving School want driving lessons spaced out a little bit? We want to allow parents & teens a little time to practice driving between lessons. Driving is a complex skill and must be practiced to do it well. Teenagers have a higher risk for crashes because they lack driving experience and because they often engage in risk-taking behaviors. The need for skill-building and driving supervision for new drivers is the basis for graduated driver licensing (GDL) systems.

If you’re a parent, your influence on your child’s future driving behaviors begins sooner than you might think.

“Children are watching their parents drive just about from the time they get turned around from their back-facing to front-facing car seat,” said Catherine McDonald, senior fellow with the Center for Injury Research and Prevention at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. “When a teen gets their learner’s permit, they probably have been watching their parents drive for 13 to 14 years, in some capacity.”

That’s why it’s important for moms and dads to set a good example.
