Finished restoring this Genesis Vortex toy hauler.

These gray Genesis trailers are some of the most difficult RVs to restore properly because the factory gel coat quality is extremely inconsistent. The gel coat is often sprayed unevenly from the factory, with different thicknesses across the same panel. Some areas hold up reasonably well while others oxidize heavily and become porous very quickly in the Southern California sun.

That’s why traditional polishing usually fails on these units long term. You can polish them, make them shiny for a short time, and then watch the oxidation come right back through because the underlying gel coat is already compromised.

In cases like this, restoration becomes less about “perfect correction” and more about stabilizing and rebuilding the surface evenly so the trailer ages consistently moving forward.

This trailer had already been restored previously and returned for maintenance. The process involved:
• Deep cleaning and oxidation removal
• Re-leveling uneven areas
• Controlled prep to reopen the surface evenly
• Multiple thin coats layered carefully to rebuild uniformity and gloss

Can these trailers be restored perfectly forever? Honestly, no. We’ll always be managing the weaknesses of the original factory finish because the gel coat itself is the limitation.

But with proper maintenance and careful restoration, a very strong result can still be achieved — and more importantly, maintained far better than leaving the failing gel coat exposed to continue deteriorating.

A lot of RV detailing is not just “making things shiny.” It’s understanding materials, UV damage, substrate behavior, and how different manufacturers age over time.

This one came out great. 👌
