Our team responded to reports of flares being launched off the west end of Anacapa Island and located this powerboat who had suffered complete mechanical and electrical failures. Having no redundant means to communicate, he resorted to using his distress flares which fortunately someone spotted and reported. We placed the vessel in tow and brought him back to land. This situation is a great reminder that our Islands have no reliable cell phone service and a handheld VHF radio is a great form of redundant communication to be able to quickly communicate assistance needs. While verbal communication is always preferred so responders know exactly what they are looking for, an EPIRB or PLB would also be great devices to carry offshore.

A grounding at Santa Rosa Island was quickly recovered and brought back to land for haul out. The vessel was deemed a total loss by the insurance company and we disposed of the vessel only a few days later.

Winter swell events are known for causing some issues inside of the Ventura Keys, and while this wasn’t a direct cause, every winter, the surge weakens some of the older docks. This style dock uses the ramp with an outrigger to connect the dock back to land, and when one fails, everything fails. The ramp and outrigger were disconnected and the dock was towed to our office until repairs could be completed.

An ungrounding from Santa Barbara. In addition to the sailboat, an overturned dingy and sunken outboard motor were recovered. This boat was later destroyed in a separate grounding.

This mariner was a tad too close to shore and rolled his Whaler in the surf. Our crews did a parbuckle on land, pulled the boat out of the surf for the night, and came back the next morning with a trailer.
