This moment was built on nearly five decades of doing things the right way. Trust from top manufacturers grows slowly, earned through a reputation shaped by a team that refuses to cut corners. Eventually, the industry took notice, and Boat Specialists stepped confidently into the national spotlight.

Nearly 50 years after Don Potts consigned three kayaks on a handshake and a dream, Boat Specialists now stands as the premier boat dealership of the West Coast. The lineup includes some of the most prestigious names in the industry, each chosen with the same care and conviction Don brought to that very first purchase.

Boat Specialists’ 50‑Year Birthday Bash and Boat Show is TOMORROW, May 2, from 11 AM to 4 PM. The biggest celebration in our history is finally here, and we want you with us when the gates open.

Here are a few quick reminders to help your arrival go smoothly:

♦️It’s not too late to RSVP. You’ll receive 5 free raffle tickets and enjoy faster entry to the event.
♦️There is plenty of street parking around the event area.
♦️You will receive your raffle tickets at check-in.
♦️Please have your ID ready if you plan to enjoy complimentary beer, seltzer, or margaritas.
♦️All attendees will receive a food voucher at check-in, good for one taco plate per person.

Fifty years holds a lot of memories and one unforgettable story. Each week we’re sharing a new chapter from The Boat Specialists Story as we count down to our 50th Birthday Bash and Boat Show, now just a little more than two weeks away. Family, passion, adventure, and decades on the water, it’s all part of the journey.

PART FOUR: BUILDING A LEGACY

What began as a tiny kayak shop in 1976 quickly grew through the ’80s and '90s into a true family venture, with boats, motors, and two kids—Jared and Jenna—learning what it meant to run a business from their parents.

As the 2000s rolled in, Boat Specialists began attracting the kind of manufacturers Don Potts always admired, brands that built with integrity and stood proudly behind their work. His simple, unwavering rule shaped every decision, and word of that commitment traveled fast. Before long, the company’s reputation stretched well past Ventura County, marking it as one of the West Coast’s standout dealerships.

When Don passed away suddenly in 2004, his son Jared stepped in to lead the family business while still in his mid‑twenties. A few years later, in 2008, Jenna joined him as Vice President. Together, they drew on everything they learned growing up in the shop to guide the company forward and honor their father’s legacy.

As the business expanded and the brand grew stronger, Jared and Jenna became the next generation of leadership, guiding Boat Specialists with the same dedication, integrity, and passion their father instilled from the very beginning.
