Here's some questions we are asked a lot. Robs Remedies: Common Car Questions 🛠️
Synthetic vs. Conventional Oil?
Synthetic is like "premium vitamins" for your engine. It has extra cleaners that help your car live longer and lets you go further between oil changes.
Why so many Antifreeze colors?
Different cars use different metals; the colors match the formula your engine needs. Never mix colors (it can clog the system) and always use a 50/50 distilled water mix.
What’s the ideal tire pressure?
35 PSI is the sweet spot for most street driving. If you go off-road, you can lower it for grip, but pump them back up before hitting the highway to avoid heavy wear.
Belt vs. Chain: What’s the difference?
Both keep your engine "in sync." Chains (metal) are durable; Belts (rubber) usually need a swap every 100k miles to avoid a major breakdown.
Why does my car struggle in the mountains?
Modern EFI systems use computers to adjust to thin mountain air automatically. Older carbureted cars are mechanical and usually need a manual adjustment to run right at high altitudes.
How often for a new air filter?
We check yours at every oil change! Typically, they need a swap every 10k–12k miles, or sooner if you drive on dusty dirt roads.
Buying a used car? Check the "Big 4":
Look for healthy tires/brakes, smooth shifting, no weird engine noises, and zero puddles underneath. We offer 30-minute inspections if you want a pro’s opinion!
Quick Road Trip Checklist:
Top off your fluids (oil, coolant, steering, brakes, washers), check your tire tread/pressure, and make sure your belts aren't cracking.
When do I need new brakes?
Squeaking: You’re getting close.
Grinding: Replace them now (it's metal-on-metal!).
Shaking: Your rotors are likely warped from heat.
Why are repairs sometimes pricey?
It usually comes down to access. A part that's easy to reach on an old truck might be buried deep in a cramped engine bay (like a PT Cruiser), taking twice the labor to reach.
