If Your Car Overheats, Stay Calm and Stay Safe.

An overheating engine can happen unexpectedly, especially during the summer months. Knowing what to do in the moment can help protect both you and your vehicle.

✅ DO:
• Pull over safely as soon as you can.
• Turn off the engine to prevent further damage.
• Let the engine cool completely before doing anything else.

❌ DON'T:
• Never remove the radiator cap while the engine is hot. The cooling system is under pressure, and hot coolant can cause serious burns.

The best way to avoid an overheating emergency is through preventative maintenance. Regular inspections of your cooling system, radiator, hoses, thermostat, and coolant levels can catch small issues before they turn into expensive repairs.

Save this tip for later—you never know when it might come in handy.

Dashboard lights aren’t suggestions—they’re warnings most drivers ignore too long.
Here is what your dashboard lights really mean:

Check Engine Light
What it means:
The check engine light can indicate anything from a loose gas cap to a faulty sensor or a more serious engine issue.
What to do:
If the light is solid, schedule a diagnostic appointment soon. If it's flashing, stop driving and have your vehicle inspected immediately, as this could indicate engine damage.

Battery Warning Light
What it means:
Your battery isn't charging properly. This could be caused by a failing alternator, battery, or charging system.
What to do:
Don't ignore it. Your vehicle could lose power without warning and leave you stranded.

Engine Temperature Light
What it means:
Your engine is overheating, often due to low coolant, a faulty thermostat, radiator issues, or cooling system failure.
What to do:
Safely pull over, turn off the engine, and allow it to cool. Never remove the radiator cap while the engine is hot.

Oil Pressure Warning Light
What it means:
Your engine isn't getting the oil pressure it needs to stay properly lubricated.
What to do:
Pull over as soon as it's safe. Continuing to drive could result in severe engine damage.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)
What it means:
One or more of your tires has low air pressure, or the TPMS system needs attention.
What to do:
Check your tire pressure as soon as possible. Properly inflated tires improve safety, fuel economy, and tire life.

Brake Warning Light
What it means:
Your parking brake may be engaged, your brake fluid may be low, or there could be a problem with your braking system.
What to do:
Have your brakes inspected immediately. Your braking system is one of the most important safety features on your vehicle

Not every dashboard light means you need to panic—but every warning light deserves your attention.

Catching problems early can help prevent expensive repairs, unexpected breakdowns, and unsafe driving conditions.

If a dashboard warning light comes on and you're not sure what it means, bring your vehicle to Johnny's Auto Clinic. Our technicians can diagnose the issue, explain what's happening, and help you get back on the road with confidence.

Cars overheat in summer traffic because cooling systems get pushed beyond their limits.

Here's how you can help prevent it:

1. Keep your coolant at the proper level.
Coolant helps regulate your engine's temperature. Low coolant is one of the most common causes of overheating, so have it checked regularly and top it off only when the engine is completely cool.

2. Stay on top of cooling system maintenance.
Your radiator, water pump, thermostat, hoses, and cooling fans all work together to keep your engine cool. Routine inspections can catch small issues before they become major repairs.

3. Avoid long periods of idling when possible.
Heavy stop-and-go traffic puts extra strain on your cooling system, especially on hot days. If you're parked for an extended time, turning off the engine can help reduce heat buildup.

4. Watch your temperature gauge.
If you notice the needle climbing higher than normal or see a temperature warning light, don't ignore it. Addressing the issue early can prevent serious engine damage.

5. Turn off your A/C if your engine starts getting too hot.
Running the air conditioner adds extra load to your engine. If you notice your temperature rising, switch off the A/C and, if needed, turn your heater on high to help pull heat away from the engine until you can safely stop.

6. Check your belts and hoses.
Cracked hoses, worn belts, or leaks can prevent coolant from circulating properly and increase your risk of overheating.

7. Schedule regular inspections.
Preventative maintenance is the best defense against overheating. Catching a small coolant leak or a weak thermostat now is much less expensive than replacing an engine later.

Remember: If your vehicle overheats, pull over safely, turn off the engine, and let it cool. Never remove the radiator cap while the engine is hot, as pressurized coolant can cause serious burns.

If you're planning a summer road trip or your vehicle hasn't had its cooling system inspected recently, stop by Johnny's Auto Clinic. We'll make sure your car is ready to handle the heat and keep you safely on the road all summer long.

Before You Hit the Road This Summer... Check These 5 Things First!

Whether you're heading out for a weekend getaway or a cross country adventure, taking a few minutes to inspect your vehicle can help prevent unexpected breakdowns and keep your trip stress free.

✔️ Tires – Check your tire pressure and tread depth. Properly inflated tires improve safety, fuel efficiency, and help prevent blowouts in the summer heat.

✔️ Fluids – Make sure your engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, windshield washer fluid, and transmission fluid are at the proper levels.

✔️ Brakes – If you hear squeaking, grinding, or notice your vehicle taking longer to stop, have your brakes inspected before you leave.

✔️ Battery – Summer heat is tough on batteries. If your battery is more than three years old or you've noticed slow starts, it's worth having it tested.

✔️ Air Conditioning – Make sure your AC is blowing cold before you're hours into your drive. A quick inspection now can help you avoid an uncomfortable trip.

A little preventative maintenance today can save you time, money, and stress down the road.

Safe travels and happy driving!
