The Hyundai and Kia 2.4L engine (primarily the Theta II GDI/MPI) was a widely used 4-cylinder engine in many 2011–2021 models. While praised for its initial power and efficiency, it is infamous for reliability issues, including catastrophic rod bearing failures and excessive oil consumption, which resulted in massive recalls and class-action lawsuits.
Hyundai Sonata (2011–2019)
Hyundai Tucson (2011–2021)
Hyundai Santa Fe / Santa Fe Sport (2010–2019)
Kia Optima: 2011–2019 (Theta II 2.4L GDI & MPI)
Kia Sorento: 2012–2019 (Theta II 2.4L GDI)
Kia Sportage: 2011–2013 (Theta II 2.4L MPI)
Kia Forte: 2010–2013 (Theta II 2.4L MPI)
Kia Forte Koup: 2010–2013 (Theta II 2.4L MPI)
Kia Optima Hybrid: 2011–2016 (Theta II 2.4L MPI Hybrid)
Common Problems:
* Rod Bearing Failure:
This is the most significant issue. Manufacturing debris left in the engine block can block oil passages, leading to oil starvation, rod knock, and catastrophic engine seizure.
* Excessive Oil Consumption:
Many owners report high oil consumption, which can quickly lead to bearing failure if oil levels drop without the driver noticing.
* Carbon Buildup (GDI models only):
Because fuel is sprayed directly into the cylinder, it doesn't clean the back of the intake valves, requiring periodic cleaning (e.g., walnut blasting) to maintain performance.
Certain versions of these engines were subject to class-action lawsuits regarding premature connecting rod bearing failure and engine seizures. Because of this, Kia has extended the Powertrain Limited Warranty for eligible 2.4L engines up to 15 years or 150,000 miles, provided the Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS) software update has been installed.
