Why does Dyno Tuning cost so much?
I get this question often. So let’s address it: A GOOD Dyno tune can average between $600 and $800 in different areas.
Plus the cost of a Tune License, approx $275, unless you unnecessarily purchased your own tuning box.
A few facts first:
One: Owning a Dyno does not make you a Tuner. Actually a Dyno has NOTHING at all to do with actual tuning as so many believe. It is only a tool that allows you to ride a bike in the shop rather than on the street, and allows to to reach areas of the tuning map that can be unsafe to reach in the street.
Two: To become proficient in tuning, it takes several years of hands on experience to master.
You don’t become a good tuner overnight, or by attending a few tuning classes. Experience is the only way and it can take 2-3 years to become somewhat proficient.
Third: To PROPERLY tune a bike, it takes an average of 5-7 hours. Properly means tuning the hundreds of individual cells in the Throttle/Rpm in the fuel map from idle all the way through wide open throttle. Then tuning the spark table to achieve maximum power through those areas.
Many, shops with little tuning experience, just tune the wide open throttle areas to just try to achieve maximum Dyno sheet numbers, and ignore the rest of the map where you ride 98% of the time, since tuning the lower areas is more challenging and takes the most time.
Forth: After tuning both Fuel and Spark tables, you often still have to optimize the cranking and warmup tables to get clean starts and warmup, especially on modified engines.
Fifth: Tuning is not flashing a download map from Dynojet or Fuel Moto to your bike! These maps are often worse than your stock map, and are just meant as a starting point for tuning. A good tuner will create his own starter map.
**Conclusion: Hope this helps you understand why a good quality tune is so costly compared to a cheap half ass one. Get it done right the first time, or pay twice to get it right!
