New data from ADAC, Europe’s largest roadside assistance provider, is challenging long-standing concerns about EV reliability.
In its latest breakdown statistics, ADAC found that electric vehicles built between 2020 and 2022 recorded just 4.2 breakdowns per 1,000 vehicles, compared to 10.4 for petrol and diesel cars.
That means combustion vehicles were more than twice as likely to break down.
The data is based on millions of roadside assistance callouts across Germany, making it one of the most comprehensive real-world datasets available.
Interestingly, the most common issue for both EVs and combustion cars wasn’t the drivetrain, it was the 12-volt battery, showing that many failures are unrelated to electric powertrains themselves.
As EV adoption grows and newer models replace older ones, reliability is increasingly becoming one of the strongest arguments in favour of electric mobility.
