Its getting to be that time of year where Gila Monsters are surfacing form their burrows! We have seen a large increase in sightings recently, and we want people to be aware of the amazing research being conducted on the species by park scientists. If you see a Gila Monster in the park, we encourage you to send a photo to [email protected] along with the location, date and time of sighting. This information is used to determine the abundance of Gila Monsters in the park, their typical lifespan and what may be threatening their population.

It is important to keep in mind that the Gila Monster is a protected species, and the law requires that these animals must be left alone in their natural environment. If you encounter a Gila Monster, please view it from a safe distance and never attempt to touch it or pick it up.

He will be missed by many!

Dear Sam Hughes Community,

It is with profound sadness and a broken heart that I inform you James “Mr. T.” Tallmadge, the Sam Hughes legend, passed away this evening.

Mr. T. was a member of the Sam Hughes family for the past 52 years and was loved deeply by our community. He made an indescribable impact on not only the Sam Hughes community, but across Tucson. His passion for education and supporting interscholastic activities led him to be the fiercest champion for all students fortunate to interact with him. It is impossible to quantify or articulate the influence Mr. Tallmadge had on public education in the city of Tucson.

He is without question the heart of our community and his absence will be a significant loss to the Sam Hughes CREW.
