1. Check Engine Light (MIL)
This light indicates a problem in the engine management system. It may be caused by a faulty oxygen sensor, loose fuel cap, bad catalytic converter, or ignition system issues like a bad spark plug or coil. The vehicle may still run, but diagnostics with an OBD scanner is recommended.
2. Oil Pressure Warning Light
This means the engine oil pressure is too low. It can happen due to low engine oil, a worn oil pump, or internal engine wear. Driving with this light on can cause severe engine damage, so the engine should be stopped immediately.
3. Battery / Charging System Light
This indicates the charging system is not working properly. Possible causes include a failing alternator, weak battery, loose battery terminals, or a broken serpentine belt. If ignored, the battery will discharge and the car may stop running.
4. Engine Coolant Temperature Light
This light warns that the engine is overheating. Common causes are low coolant level, thermostat failure, radiator fan malfunction, or coolant leaks. Continuing to drive can cause engine overheating and head gasket damage.
5. ABS Warning Light
This means the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) has a fault. It could be due to a faulty wheel speed sensor, damaged ABS ring, or ABS module issue. Normal braking will still work, but ABS safety function will be disabled.
6. Brake System Warning Light
This warning indicates a brake system problem. It could be low brake fluid, worn brake pads, parking brake engaged, or master cylinder failure. This should be checked immediately because it affects vehicle stopping ability.
7. Airbag / SRS Warning Light
This light shows a problem with the airbag safety system. Causes include faulty crash sensors, loose airbag wiring, clock spring failure, or SRS control module issues. In an accident, the airbags may not deploy properly.
8. Traction Control / ESC Light
This light relates to the traction control or electronic stability control system. It may be caused by wheel speed sensor failure, steering angle sensor issues, or yaw rate sensor malfunction. The system that prevents skidding and loss of control may be disabled.
9. Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)
This warning indicates low tire pressure. It can also occur due to sudden temperature changes, a slow air leak, or a faulty TPMS sensor. Driving with low tire pressure can cause poor handling and tire damage.
10. Power Steering Warning Light
This means there is a problem in the power steering system. Causes include low power steering fluid, electric steering motor failure, or pump problems. Steering may become very heavy and difficult to control.
11. Transmission Temperature Warning Light
This indicates the transmission is overheating. It may happen due to low transmission fluid, a faulty transmission cooler, or internal transmission slipping. Continuous driving may cause serious transmission damage.
12. Glow Plug Indicator (Diesel Engines)
This light appears in diesel vehicles during engine preheating. If it stays on or flashes, it may indicate faulty glow plugs, relay failure, wiring issues, or ECU faults. This can cause hard starting or rough engine operation.
