On July 31, 1911, General Motors became the first automobile company on the New York Stock Exchange.

In GM’s first two years, William C. Durant bought several other automakers as part of an expansion strategy, but he overextended and many of the new subsidiaries produced subpar cars. The resulting debt and loss of trust from the public led to Durant’s leaving the company in 1910.

Despite these early financial troubles, GM grew to $60 million in capital and a net worth of $35 million by 1911, and the company chose to list its shares for public trade via the NYSE. This milestone marked the first automaker to have publicly available financial statements, and it was a major step in GM regaining the public’s confidence.

On December 18, 2009, General Motors announced its decision to shut down Saab after failing to secure a buyer. While a company known as NEVS would try to save the company between 2011 and 2014, less than 500 cars were built under that leadership. GM’s shutdown ultimately marked the end of Saab as an independent automaker.
