Last week Pinpoint Repair revived a 2015 model S Tesla. This one was towed in, would not close the high voltage contactors or move on its own. Tons of fault codes. High voltage (hv) isolation too low. This means hv is detected on chassis ground. Did an insulation check on the drive unit and found only a fraction of a mega ohm. Some moisture found on the speed sensor, this indicates the common issue of coolant intrusion into the drive unit , which shorts out the windings to ground. Swapped out the drive unit with a reman. One with updated bearings and seals and the coolant delete mod that prevents coolant intrusion. She’s up and running again!

A 2021 model Y showed up for a headlight swap due to 2/3 leds for the low beams not working. Used replacements were provided, but even one of those had issues. It appears the led drivers in the control modules failed on both. Resulting in dead leds for the parking and lows, and also one wouldn’t shut off. Tesla quoted $4k to replace both!

The EV mini bike project is finally operational! I bought this frame with no engine around 2017 for $20, finally found the time to mount up the 1000w 48v motor, controller, and some garbage picked lithium batteries. It’ll do about 25mph on pavement. Something about a mini bike makes kids and adults smile 😎.

Found this beauty rolling around on the road. It’s an iron weight from a vehicle’s chassis vibration mass damper. I see these being loose on many vehicles in the rust belt. It weighs 1.5lb and creates quite a hazard on the highways, when they fall off and go through someone’s windshield! Calling out the to introduce some laws or checks for these to prevent accidents, if they don’t already exist. If they do, let me know. When the rubber glue bond fails they can just exit the chat, they should be captive with a rubber encased bolt in my opinion. -Dan

Bmw i3 HV batt innards. 2014 i3 rex, “bricked” by the SME battery control electronics computer. Current (amperage) sensor faults stored, preventing closing of the contactors, won’t charge, or run the rex. The battery is pretty easy to drop and service.

This week at Pinpoint: Yale hydraulic forklift cylinder rebuilds, got to use my largest vintage Ridge tool co. pipe wrench, a smaller one with 5ft cheater pipe, to open the gland nut, she cracked open too easy, Collabo with , I keep about 10x 10 mils around so he never has to look for one.

This week at Pinpoint, I found some time to build a useful tool: the forklift trailer hitch adapter. Built with scrap angle iron, 3/4 concrete anchors, and a ball mount. It weighs 36 lbs. This makes moving trailers around faster and easier. If you need any welding or simple fab projects done, let us know. We have mig, tig, and stick welding capabilities.

Bmw i3 in the house for a much needed rubber change. Installing lightly used tires. This size is rare, and only a couple companies make the tires. 175/60/19. I run this size front and rear. The original fronts were 155/70/19. Way too small and no protection for the rim on pot holes.
