One 2-foot drop. That's all it took to shake this much dirt out of an engine air filter.

Quick honesty check: do you know when yours was last replaced? Guesses and confessions welcome in the comments.

Everything on that floor was sitting between the engine and the air it needs to run. A filter this loaded restricts airflow, which means the engine works harder to make the same power.

The good news is it's one of the quickest and least expensive services on any vehicle. We recommend checking it at every oil change, and most manufacturers call for replacement somewhere around 15,000 to 30,000 miles. Dusty roads and construction zones can shorten that.

honest, how many of you have grabbed a can of AC recharge off the parts store shelf this summer?

No judgment. It's mid September and Tomball still feels like July.

Here's the thing though. Your AC system is sealed. Refrigerant doesn't get used up, so if the system is low, it leaked out. Topping it off might buy you two weeks of cold air before it goes right back out the same hole it left through. A lot of those cans also carry stop leak and dye, which can gum up the system and make the real repair cost more than it needed to.

This F-150 came in blowing warm. Gauges are on it so we can see what the system is actually doing before anyone reaches for a can of anything.

Exhaust noise on this Jeep, and the cause was a previous repair that wasn't done right.

The joint was welded over rusted metal with no prep and no section replacement. Weld on top of rust doesn't hold, and this one had already cracked back open.

Doing it correctly means cutting out the rotted section back to solid pipe and welding in new material. It takes longer, and it's the only version that lasts.

Worth knowing, this isn't only a noise issue. Fumes can work into the cabin, and a leak ahead of the oxygen sensor can skew fuel trims and set a check engine light.

Customer came in for a noise while driving. Then we got it on the rack.

Look at the inside edge of that tire. Worn smooth, while the outside edge still has plenty of tread left.

Wear like that doesn't happen on its own. Something is holding that tire at an angle every mile it rolls, and once the inner edge goes, it starts putting out a hum that a lot of folks mistake for a bad wheel bearing.

Sound on. That is not road noise. That bearing is already toast.

This Chevrolet came in sounding like this. A bearing this far gone gets louder with speed, and it does not get better, it gets unsafe. At this point it is a replacement, not a wait and see.

Be honest: has your brake fluid ever been changed? 🤔

Most drivers don't realize brake fluid wears out, but it does. It slowly absorbs moisture over time (and all the humidity around here doesn't help), and that water lowers its boiling point. Towing, hard stops, or stop-and-go traffic heat up your brakes, and old fluid can boil and leave you with a soft, spongy pedal right when you need it most. Moisture also causes corrosion inside brake lines, calipers, and the ABS unit, and those repairs get pricey.

Today in the bay, we're flushing out the old fluid and replacing it with fresh fluid using our BG brake service system.

Somebody had to work pretty hard to get this one wrong.

This Audi came in with an AC system that wasn't cooling. Another shop had already "serviced" it and charged the system with R-134a. This vehicle doesn't take R-134a.

Here's the part that gets us. The service ports on these newer systems are a different size on purpose, specifically so the wrong refrigerant can't be connected by accident. Getting 134a in there takes an adapter and a decision to ignore the label sitting right there under the hood.

So now it's not a simple recharge. The contaminated refrigerant has to be recovered and handled separately, the system evacuated, and the correct refrigerant and oil put back in. All of that on top of a job that was already paid for once.

Two minutes of testing before hooking up would have prevented every bit of it.

That crumbly pile in the middle of this hub used to be an axle nut.

It rusted so badly it turned to dust, and it happened on both the driver and passenger side. That nut is what clamps the axle tight into the wheel bearing. Lose that clamp load and the splines start beating themselves up, taking the bearing with them. This one is getting axles and hubs on both sides.

Rust like this is a road salt story. We see it on vehicles that spent their early life up north before moving down here with their owners, and it usually stays hidden until somebody pulls a wheel off.

48 degrees out of the vent while it’s over 100 outside. That’s what a healthy system should feel like.

Here’s a 10 second test you can run in your own driveway. AC on max, recirculate on, then hold your hand in front of the center vent for about a minute.

Not every car that rolls through the bay makes you want to take the long way back.

This 86 came in with a check engine light on. No rough idle, no drivability complaint, just the light. Diagnosis pointed to a failed oxygen sensor. That sensor is what the ECU uses to fine tune the fuel mixture, so when it stops reading accurately you start losing fuel economy and can eventually damage a catalytic converter, even while the car still feels perfectly normal to drive.

Fixed up and back to doing what it does best, which is making every corner feel like an event.
