Happy National Loggers Day! Did you know the knuckle boom logging loader, a game changer in the logging industry, was invented in Wisconsin? Leo Heikkinen invented the hydraulic knuckle boom crane after he saw loggers struggling to load logs onto trucks efficiently. A knuckle boom, or articulating crane, has a hydraulically operated boom that can fold in multiple sections, allowing for better maneuvering and flexibility when lifting and loading materials. It is made up of a main boom and an outer boom, with a knuckle between them. Prior to his invention, pulpwood was bundled using a chain or cable and then the bunch was loaded onto the truck with a winch. The knuckle boom crane improved efficiency, precision and saved on labor.

Heikkinen was born into a logging and farming family in Brantwood in Price County in 1917. After training as a machinist in Milwaukee, and running a machine shop with his brothers in Price County, Heikkinen incorporated the Prentice Hydraulics Company in 1959, naming it after the town where he worked. He eventually sold it to Omark Industries in 1967. He passed away in 1999.
