Wind pushing the boat from behind as you come into the slip? Here's my sequence: wheel all the way right, reverse, let the boat rotate, back to neutral. A short bump forward, then reverse again. Grab the piling, and the first line on is the stern line. As the wind pushes, that line goes tight and you're safe. The bow lines and spring can wait.

New boaters, is this you? Wrapping the line around the cleat a whole bunch of times and hoping for the best? I see it in every marina. If that's what your cleat looks like, it's not correct, and it's a pain to untie when you need to leave in a hurry. A proper cleat hitch takes one wrap, a figure eight, and a locking loop. Tag a boater whose cleat looks like this.

A client with a 24-foot pontoon asked which side of his slip is easier. Both sides are open. I ran each one through DockWise. One side is beginner friendly because you can use the boat's natural momentum to come in. The other means a full stop, a 90-degree rotation, and entering the slip with nothing carrying you. Wind and fairway width are the same either way, so momentum decides it. Which side would you pick?

Docking alone in a windy marina, start to finish. When I turn down the fairway, the wind will hit my starboard side and push me left, so I hug the docks on my right and aim at the end of them. If the wind and momentum push me, I've got plenty of room to recover before I end up in someone's slip. No more speed than necessary, then neutral and let the momentum carry me in.

Before I back in, I check the wind: right now it's on my stern, and once I start backing it'll be hitting the starboard side. And like always, we film no matter what. You don't want to be the guy stumbling around, having a hard time docking at a dock you've never seen. Before I got here, I checked the wind: it's pushing me from the stern forward and a little on my starboard side. That tells me two lines on the port side plus the aft spring line, which will take the load. Lines rigged before I arrive, no scrambling.
