Woman Takes Her Corvair for an Eternal Cruise

PROVIDENCE, R.I.--Three decades after Ralph Nader portrayed the Corvair as a casket on wheels in his book "Unsafe at Any Speed," 84-year-old Rose Martin was laid to rest in her beloved 1962 model.

"She prearranged with us, and this was her wish. It was very well known throughout Tiverton that she wanted this," said Robert Ferreira, a director of the Oliveira Funeral Home in Fall River, Mass.

The widow and mother of three, who died Saturday, drove the flat-looking rear-engine white car around the town of Tiverton, population 14,000, for 36 years.

"She just loved the car. She didn't care what it cost to fix the car. If the car was broken, she wasn't one to ask you how much.

'Just fix it,' " recalled Tiverton Auto Body owner George Murray.

Mourners at her burial at Pocasset Hill Cemetery grinned through their tears as six police officers acting as pallbearers slid the inlaid wood coffin into an opening in the rear of the Corvair, which had been altered to accommodate the casket. The car was then lowered into the ground with a crane. It took up four burial plots. An old handicapped license plate, held with a rubber band on the visor, was removed and handed to Martin's relatives.

The Corvair was a popular car in the 1960s before it was buried by the rise of the muscle car and the 1965 expose written by Nader, who said it had serious steering and control problems. But to Martin, a talkative and no-nonsense woman who served as a police matron tending to female prisoners at the town jail, the low-slung car with four front headlights was a gem. She was laid to rest next to her husband, with a headstone showing a picture of her and the car.

George Murray

On a Saturday night in May of 1966, a young Tiverton native picked up his first career win at Seekonk. With a handful of wins over the next few years, George Murray started to make his mark on the ¼ mile speedway.

The early 70’s, George started to make his mark, picking some big wins, including the 1971 Columbus Day 200.

One of his highlight wins happened in 1974. When George Summers was on one of the hottest winning streaks to ever happen to Seekonk, D. Anthony Venditti put a bounty out on Summers. After seven straight wins, it was George Murray who stopped the streak. Kraze Korlacki presented George with the checked flag from that night, which was proudly displayed at his shop, Tiverton Auto Body.

In 75, George started the year off with a win, and with the addition of 8 additional checkered flags, he picked up his first career championship.

He continued his winning ways in 76, picking up three wins and his second title. His biggest win that year was in the season ending 100 lap finale.

It was another three years before he tasted victory again, but this time it was behind the wheel of a Pro Stock, a new class of race cars designed to save the racers money. In 1980, he became a three time track champion, and the first to win titles in the modifieds and Pro Stocks.

His final win came on September 7th, 1991, driving for Ronnie Pond, which I believe may be the only win driving for someone else.

While George would compete throughout New England in his modified through the years, Seekonk was always home for the three time champion.

Outside of the car, he was a close family man with his wife Susan, his daughter Lori, and sons Russel and Scott. He taught them a strong work ethic and family support.

He also had strong ties to the town of Tiverton with his Auto Body Shop, working with and helping the town and others whenever he could.

Tonight, Georges accomplishments, his 32 wins, his 3 championships, his career at Seekonk as a great competitor and even greater friend, will forever be honored.

Join me in welcoming to the Seekonk Speedway Wall of Fame, George Murray.
