A question we get a lot: "Can you tell me what's wrong over the phone?"

Honest answer: No, realistically we can't be sure without seeing the boat.

Plenty of problems look alike from the outside. A rough idle, a loss of power, or a hard start can each have several different causes. Guessing over the phone can send you down the wrong path and cost you money on parts you didn't need.

TUESDAY TIP: What's your plan if your electronics go dark?

Modern boats lean hard on screens. Chartplotter, GPS, depth, engine data, sometimes the radio too. They're great when they work. But a blown fuse, a loose connection, a dead battery, or a wave over the console can take them out in a second.

A few simple backups worth carrying:
~Handheld VHF radio. Charged, in a dry bag or holder, and you know how to use it. If your fixed radio goes down, this is how you call for help.
~Your phone, protected. A waterproof case or dry bag, a charging cable, and a navigation app downloaded ahead of time so it works without cell service.
~A paper chart of your home waters. Doesn't need batteries. Know roughly where the channels and shallow spots are. There are tons of videos of knowledgable people willing to explain how to read these charts online, find one that works for you.
~Know where you are. Every so often, glance at your position and landmarks. If the screen goes dark, you'll already have a good idea of where you are and how to get home.
~Spare fuses. Find out which fuses run your electronics and keep a few spares on board. A lot of "dead" electronics are just a blown fuse.

Ten minutes of prep now saves a stressful afternoon later.

Three boat myths we hear all the time.

MYTH: Running on fuel with ethanol in it doesn't hurt anything
FACT: Not only can it eat at plastics part of the fuel system it also erodes the fuel hose which will get into the VST tank and clog the filters.

MYTH: If it starts, it's fine.
FACT: Starting is only the first test. Plenty of problems show up only under load, at cruise, or after the engine gets hot. A boat that starts right up can still need attention.

MYTH: New engines don't need a break-in.
FACT: Most manufacturers spell out a break-in period, with varied RPM and no long stretches at full throttle for the first several hours. Following it helps the engine last.

A lot of owners go by hours alone. If the boat only ran 40 hours this year, the oil must be fine, right? Not quite. Oil breaks down over time too, and in a hot, humid place like Florida, moisture and combustion byproducts build up in it whether the engine runs a lot or not.

A good rule for most four-stroke outboards and inboards: change the oil and filter every 100 hours or once a year, whichever comes first.
What to look for on the dipstick:
~Level. Check it with the engine level and cool, the same way every time. Low oil means it's being burned or leaking. Too high can be just as bad.
~Color and feel. Fresh oil is amber. Dark is normal with use, but gritty or sludgy is not.
~Milky or tan oil. That's a sign water is getting into the oil. Stop running the engine and have it looked at.
~Fuel smell. Oil that smells strongly of gas, or a level that keeps rising, can mean fuel is getting into the crankcase.
~The right oil. Use the oil type and weight your engine's manufacturer specifies. Marine engines work harder than car engines, and the oil is formulated for it.

Checking the dipstick takes 30 seconds. Make it a habit before your first run of the day.
