A customer asked us this week: "How often should I actually have my lower unit oil changed?"

Fair question. The answer surprises a lot of people.
-Every year, minimum. Or every 100 hours of use, whichever comes first. Why so often?

Lower unit gear oil doesn't just lubricate. It also protects against water intrusion. If a seal is starting to go and a little water gets in, fresh oil will catch it. Old, tired oil already has moisture and metal in it, and you can't tell the difference.

What to look for at the drain:
~Clean, honey-colored oil = good
~Milky / cloudy = water intrusion, needs seal work
~Metal shavings on the magnet = wear happening internally, bring it in
~Black / burnt smell = overheated at some point, worth a deeper look

We include the visual check anytime we do a lower unit service. It's five extra minutes and it's caught a lot of small problems before they became rebuilds.

If you own an outboard, this is the part of it you probably never see.

Most owners see the cowling. We see everything under it. And what's under there tells the truth about how a boat has been treated -clean fuel or dirty, salt rinsed off or salt cooked on, oil changed on time or "when I remembered."

You don't have to know what any of it does. But you should know somebody who does, before it goes quiet on you.

TUESDAY TIP: Do a real safety gear audit before Labor Day weekend.

Not the once-over glance. An actual check. Most of us have gear on board that got tossed in the storage locker two years ago and hasn't been looked at since. Here's what to pull out and confirm:

~Kill switch (engine cut-off lanyard): Federal law since 2021 requires it be used on most boats under 26 feet when the engine is above idle. Test that yours actually cuts the engine when pulled
~Life jackets: One per person on board, USCG-approved, in serviceable condition. Kids need child-sized -an adult jacket on a child is worse than no jacket. Check the straps and buckles, not just that they're there.
~Throwable (Type IV): Required on boats 16 feet and longer. Make sure yours is accessible, not buried under a cooler.
~Fire extinguisher: Check the gauge -in the green? Check the date -most marine extinguishers now have expiration dates and need to be replaced every 12 years. Check the hose isn't cracked.
~Flares/distress signals: Handheld and aerial flares expire 42 months from date of manufacture. If yours are expired, they don't count toward legal minimums. Buy fresh before the weekend.
~Sound-producing device: Whistle or horn on hand.
~Nav lights: Test them AT NIGHT, not in bright sun. Bulbs go, connections corrode, and you don't want to find out returning after sunset.
~Anchor + rode: Actually deployed lately? Rode chafed? Enough scope for local depths?
~First aid + water: Restocked, not two years old.
~Registration + documentation. On board, current, findable.

This is the audit that separates a good weekend from a bad one. Ten minutes now saves a Coast Guard citation, a call to Sea Tow, or worse.

Friday. Heading into the weekend.

Two things worth knowing before you launch:
~Weather: Deep summer Florida means afternoon storms are close to a lock. Get your ride in early or keep an eye on the radar.
~Ramps and inlets: Local ramps get crowded on Saturday mornings, have a backup ramp in mind. And if you're running the inlets on the Space Coast, check the tides and the surf report before you commit. Sebastian and Port Canaveral both change quickly on an outgoing tide with a stiff east wind.

Quick pre-launch:
~Pee stream on startup
~Bilge pump tested
~Kill switch clipped
~Life jackets sized for who's on board
~Full fuel (e-free)
~Water and shade

Here's what actually happens when you drop a boat off for a diagnostic-

~First: Visual inspection before anything gets touched. Fluids, connections, mounting hardware, obvious wear.
~Next: System-by-system, a generalized check then another check based on the symptoms. Compression test. Fuel pressure. Spark. Cooling. Electronics. We work through it in the order the symptoms point to -not the order that runs up a bill.
~Then: We write up and estimate and give you a call. We explain the estimate -what we did, what we found, and how much it'll cost.

We give every boat the same attention, rushing diagnostics can lead to missing issues customers may not have noticed.

TUESDAY TIP: Check your hydraulic steering fluid. It's the system nobody thinks about until it's the reason they can't turn.

What to check:

~Fluid level at the helm pump: Most helm pumps have a fill cap on top. Fluid should be clean and near the top of the reservoir. Air gaps up there mean air is somewhere in the system, which is why the wheel feels spongy.

~Fluid color: Fresh marine hydraulic fluid is clear or slightly amber. If yours is dark, cloudy, or has particles floating in it, water or contamination has gotten in. That's a bring-it-in call.

~Cylinder and hose weeps: Get behind the engine or in the engine compartment and look at the cylinder (the ram on the back of the outboard, or on the drive). Any weeping around fittings, any wet spots on hoses, any residue on the transom- all signs a seal or fitting is starting to give up.

~Wheel feel at the dock: Turn lock-to-lock a few times before you leave the ramp. It should feel smooth and even the whole way. Spongy in one direction, hard spots, or clicking sounds all mean something.

~After any hose or fitting is touched -a rebuild, a new engine, a repair- the system needs to be properly bled. Air trapped in hydraulic lines is the single most common cause of "it turns weird now" complaints.

**Marine hydraulic fluid isn't automotive brake fluid. It's not power steering fluid either. Use what your system specs recommend.**
