Model T Pig N' Fords

Model T Pig N' Fords Come see us at the Tillamook County Fair! The first Pig N' Ford race took place at the Tillamook County Fair in 1925.

The idea for the race happened when a couple of Tillamook County residents were transporting some pigs and one got loose. They proceeded to chase the pig in their Model T Fords and had so much fun trying to catch and drive with the pesky pig that they thought "let do this at the fair!"

Friday Race Report

🏁🔥 HEAT 1 🔥🏁

2️⃣ Car 13 — Dillon Walker
3️⃣ Car 16 — Nick Hurliman
4️⃣ Car 18 — Oliver Hurliman
5️⃣ Car 15 — George Gayette

👨‍👦 And there was an extra family storyline in this heat:
Car 16 driver Nick Hurliman is the dad of Car 18 driver Oliver Hurliman!

The cars roared out of the starting line…

Well… almost all of them. 😳

Rookie Oliver Hurliman found out very quickly that a Model T can be VERY unpredictable! His car gave him trouble, and he couldn't get going with the rest of the field.

The race was on!

🔄 EXCHANGE 1

Coming in for Exchange 1, the order was:

🥇 Walker
🥈 Wassmer
🥉 Nick Hurliman
4️⃣ Gayette

Oliver Hurliman was already a lap behind after finally getting his Model T started.

They took off from the pens in the same order.

🔄 EXCHANGE 2

The order coming in for Exchange 2 was once again:

🥇 Walker
🥈 Wassmer
🥉 Nick Hurliman
4️⃣ Gayette

Oliver came in late, still one lap behind.

Then things got interesting!

Taking off from Exchange 2:

🏎️ Walker
🏎️ Nick Hurliman
🏎️ Gayette

Wassmer followed after having a bit of trouble getting his car started.

Now it was time to see who could hold on to the finish…

🏆 THE FINISH!

Dillon Walker takes the Heat 1 win! 🏁🔥

🥇 Dillon Walker
🥈 Nick Hurliman
🥉 George Gayette
4️⃣ Bobby Wassmer
5️⃣ Oliver Hurliman — 1 lap behind

THEY MEANT FAST! 💨💨💨

Haertel blasted out first with Salo right on his tail!

Pugh got out third, but Chris Hurliman wasted no time and quickly passed him.

Seth Wehinger came out last.

The field was moving, and the race was already heating up! 🔥

🔄 EXCHANGE 1

Pugh and Wehinger followed.

But what happens at the pens can change everything…

Taking off from Exchange 1, the order was different.

Salo had some trouble with his car, so the field left the pens:

1️⃣ Haertel
2️⃣ Wehinger
3️⃣ Hurliman
4️⃣ Pugh
5️⃣ Salo

The race was far from settled!

🔄 EXCHANGE 2

Coming in for Exchange 2:

🥇 Haertel
🥈 Hurliman

4️⃣ Salo

And then…

DRAMA ON THE TRACK! 😱🏁

Jake Pugh was having trouble and made the decision to skip his exchange.

That meant he would be disqualified…

…but he was already out on the track, and that move?

🔥 IT DROVE THE CROWD WILD! 🔥

Pugh bypassed the exchange and continued driving, while Haertel, Hurliman, Wehinger, and Salo took off from Exchange 2.

The final sprint was on!

🏆 THE FINISH!

Could anyone catch Haertel?

NOPE!

🏆 Ethen Haertel takes the Heat 2 win!

🥇 Ethen Haertel
🥈 Chris Hurliman
🥉 Seth Wehinger
4️⃣ Ben Salo

Jake Pugh was disqualified for bypassing the exchange, but his decision certainly gave the crowd something to talk about! 🤠🔥

Pig n Fords have fans all over the world. Thanks to social media, the thrill of watching a Model T Pig n Ford race has reached far beyond Tillamook. Some fans even go the extra MILES—literally—traveling internationally just to experience it. Because let’s be honest… it’s something you truly have to see to believe.

Meet Patricia and Alexander from Germany. They first discovered Pig n Ford racing online—but they didn’t stop there. At the same time, they were planning to get married. So they came up with an unforgettable idea: travel to Tillamook, Oregon, get married, and celebrate by attending the Pig n Ford races. But how do you make something like that happen?

Here’s what they did.

At the beginning of summer, they reached out to Tillamook County Clerk Christy Nyseth Donowho and asked if she would marry them. The answer? Yes.

Then came the next request. After the ceremony, they wanted to attend the Tillamook County Fair, watch the Pig n Ford races, and meet some of the drivers. Could Christy help make that happen?

In a small town, connections go a long way.

Christy reached out to Shelley Hurliman, whose family owns and races two Model T’s. Shelley’s son, Chris Hurliman—driver of Car 12—helped make their dream a reality. As they say, it’s all about who you know.

As if that wasn’t special enough, the newlyweds were introduced over the loudspeaker during the races that same day, welcomed in front of a packed grandstand of cheering fans.

And that’s how Patricia and Alexander from Germany spent their honeymoon—at the Tillamook County Fair, celebrating their marriage with the unforgettable excitement of Model T Pig n Ford racing in Tillamook, Oregon.

Thursday Race Day 2
Note: When listing starting lineups this week, number 1 is closest to the pig pens and so forth to number 5 which is closest to the grandstands.
Heat 1
1. Car 19 McKenzi Wassmer
2. Car 18 Smily Hurliman
3. Car 15 Drew Prince
4. Car 13 Dillon Walker
5. Car 17 Jake Pugh

All were “neck and neck” taking off, except for Walker Car 13. His car wouldn't start. He tried and tried, but no luck. He had to drop out of the race.

Coming in for exchange 1 it was Wassmer, Prince, Hurliman & Pugh. It started to look like it was going to be a dual between Wassmer & Prince.

Prince got out first and Wassmer had some trouble taking off, providing Prince with a handy lead. That's the excitement of T racing. You never know what is going to happen with these finicky cars. Hurliman & Pugh arrived at the pens and Pugh managed to take off out of the pens before Hurliman.

Exchange 2 had Prince in the lead followed by Wassmer, next Hurliman who had passed Pugh. Taking off Prince had the lead then Wassmer, Pugh and Hurliman coming out last.

Coming in for the finish, it was Prince with an easy win, followed by Wassmer, Pugh and Hurliman.

Heat 2
1. Car 14 Spencer Wehinger
2. Car 10 Ethen Haertel
3. Car 20 Ben Salo
4. Car 16 Chad Wilson
5. Car 12 Chris Hurliman

The take off was FAST. Haertel was out first with Salo on his tail. Hurliman followed with Wehinger & Wilson coming up behind.

Exchange 1
Salo had managed to move to the lead before Haertel when they both roared to the pens for exchange 1. Hurliman was right on their tail. Wehinger & Wilson came in fourth and fifth to the pens.
Pulling out of exchange 1 it was Salo, Haertel, Hurliman, Wehinger & Wilson.

Exchange 2
Coming in for exchange 2 it was the same order as they took off: Salo, Haertel, Hurliman, Wehinger & Wilson. And...guess what? The take off was the same order. One note, Wilson may have been able to move up to fourth, but Wehinger's T had him blocked in at the pens and Wilson had to wait until Wehinger took off. Anything can happen in a Pig n Ford race!

Salo was the winner with Haertel, Hurliman, Wehinger & Wilson coming in after. It was a good race.

See ya this afternoon (Friday) for more Pig n Ford Races. 5:30pm at the Tillamook County Fair!
