The Detroit Diesel 8V71 did not need high rpm to sound like it was running for its life. Its two-stroke design fired every cylinder once per crankshaft revolution—twice as often as a four-stroke engine—creating the rapid exhaust rhythm that made old buses, cabovers, fire trucks, workboats, and heavy equipment impossible to ignore.

Its name explained the engine: eight cylinders in a V layout, with 71 cubic inches per cylinder. That added up to 568 cubic inches, or 9.3 liters. One naturally aspirated truck version produced 318 hp at 2,100 rpm and 818 lb-ft at 1,400 rpm.

The famous whine came from its Roots-type blower. Unlike a conventional performance supercharger, the blower was essential to the engine’s operation, forcing fresh air through the cylinders and clearing the exhaust gases. Combined with the two-stroke firing pattern, it created the unmistakable “Screaming Jimmy” soundtrack.

The Series 71 family dated back to 1938 and became known for its compact design and ability to power everything from military equipment and generators to trucks and marine vessels. It was loud, smoky, demanding, and completely lacking in refinement—but few diesel engines ever had more personality.
