at the age of 19, Ernest Spence went to work with an uncle in the oil business. A few years later, Spence began operating a small service station on Smith Avenue, near the Georgia Create & Basket Company. Spence was always looking to improve and grow; he also enjoyed building and decided the automobile would be his building tool. Spence began perfecting his art of buying broken down Model A's, repairing them and offering them for sale on easy terms. "I became proficient in repair, and some required extensive repairs," said Spence. Spence was dedicated to mastering the art of service and accommodation and in 1938 Dr. A. Tuck bought the first Oldsmobile and then Spence became a franchise dealer in cooperation with a body shop. At the time, the line was Oldsmobile, Pontiac and International Trucks. Spence started the dealership based on quality, service and customer satisfaction. During World War Two, Spence sold out of the automobile business and went into the U.S. Spence came home in 1946 and was on hand as a salesman to serve his old friends at the dealership. He later repurchased the dealership in 1954 and began building an organization devoted to service. After many years located off of U.S. 19 South; Spence Cadillac-Buick-GMC and Roy Campbell Chevrolet consolidated, effective April 28, 2011 to become Spence Chevrolet-Buick-GMC-Cadillac, now located at 11646 U.S. 319 North. Al Park, president and chairman of the board of the new company was also president of the former Spence dealership. James Sumner, general manager at the former Spence dealership, is general manager, a vice president and a stockholder in the new company. Other vice presidents and stockholders are Rocky Spence and Peter Wolsfelt, both Spence employees. "The 19,000-square-foot former Roy Campbell housing is on a 6.6-acre tract," said Park. "This has provided more room for inventory to be available at the new location." Not only does Spence sell new and used cars, but a large part of the business is servicing vehicles. "The service staff is highly technically trained and very experienced," said Park, "which is extremely important since cars have gone from mechanical to technical." At Spence we have a huge repair emphasis because we want to know what is going on with the vehicle," said Park. "We feel like many people take that into consideration when purchasing their next vehicle, they know we will take care of it and come back to us." The service department also has a complete line of GM parts for all GM vehicles and a collision repair facility.
