A tiny clunk under the floorboards on the 15 usually gets ignored until you are crawling up Cleghorn or out in Anza-Borrego.

Months of hot Inland Empire summer trails bake stock rubber suspension bushings until they dry out and split. Once that play starts, your control arms shift under braking, your steering starts wandering on the pavement, and your tires take the hit next.

Before fall trail runs get into full swing, slide underneath with a pry bar and check your arm joints for torn boots or dry rot.

When was the last time you checked your suspension hardware after a hard dirt run? Let us know in the comments.

Bent tie rods cost double.

A slight hit on a rutted climb can bend a factory steering linkage just enough to throw your toe alignment off by half an inch. You might not even feel the pull on the drive home down the 15, but by the following weekend, the inner shoulder of your front tires is scrubbed down to the wear bars.

Catching a bent rod on the rack early means a straightforward replacement and an alignment check. Letting it ride means buying two new thirty-five-inch tires on top of the steering hardware.

Have you ever sacrificed a good tire to a slightly bent steering link?

Most drivers just muscle through a slight pull to the right on the freeway, thinking it comes with owning solid axles and 35-inch tires.

That drift usually means your caster angle slipped or a track bar bushing took a beating out in the desert wash. A quarter-inch of misalignment will chew through an expensive set of mud-terrains before the rain season even hits Southern California. Catching loose front-end hardware on an alignment rack takes an hour; replacing cupped tires costs four figures.

How often do you check your front-end torque specs after a rocky run?

Desert season is kicking off across Southern California, and those cooler canyon runs are calling. Before you load up for Ocotillo Wells, Anza-Borrego, or Johnson Valley, climb under your rig with a pry bar and check your control arm bushings. Hard summer heat dries out rubber joints fast. Once you drop tire pressure and hit rutted shelf roads, cracked bushings turn into steering wobble and nasty driveline vibrations on the drive back. When was the last time you checked your suspension joints for play?
