Strange Incidents!

On August 19, 1961, one of the most unusual traffic accidents in history took place along the harbor of Lysekil, Sweden. A driver parked a red Volvo PV544 on a sloped street near the water and stepped away, forgetting to engage the handbrake properly.

With no one behind the wheel to stop it, the driverless car began rolling downhill, quickly gaining speed as it crossed the harbor road toward the edge of the pier.

Under normal circumstances, the runaway vehicle would have plunged straight into the sea. Instead, it collided directly with a docked Swedish Navy submarine, the HMS Bävern (or HSwMS Bävern), which was tied up right at the dock.

The front of the Volvo struck the submarine’s bow and became wedged over the ledge, leaving its front tires dangling precariously above the water.

Fortunately, nobody was injured in the bizarre collision. While the car's front end suffered heavy damage, the submarine walked away with only minor dents to its railing and remained in active naval service until 1980.

Local newspaper editor and photographer Hans Johansson captured the surreal aftermath, preserving what remains history’s only documented collision between a civilian car and a military submarine. By an extraordinary coincidence, both the Volvo PV544 model and the Bävern submarine were manufactured in the exact same year, 1958.
