Starting 31st is not an excuse. Brad Gutierrez drove the Academy #84 through a lap 10 wreck and all the way to the lead of the ISRL Lone Star 200 at Texas, and the broadcast booth noticed before we did. Old tires and a badly timed caution dropped him to 10th at the flag. Would you have pitted or stayed out?

Zandvoort doesn't do runoff. It does gravel, and race 4 found all of it.

Race 4 of 6 in Thursday Night Lights, Porsche Cup cars at Circuit Zandvoort. Contact into turn one
on the opening lap, spins in pairs, one car into the wall, and more trips through the gravel than
we could fit in three minutes.

Fixed setups and a tight iRating split, so nobody gets to drive away and hide.

Two rounds left. Come race with us Thursdays: Academy Sim Racing in Tampa. academysim.com

Short shifting barely saves fuel. The real technique is where you lift, not where you shift.

Most people think fuel saving means lifting and coasting, or short shifting. Short shifting is a myth. You save so little from it, it basically doesn't matter.

What actually works is lifting about 50 to 100 meters before your normal braking point, then braking a little later than you'd think. You let the car scrub speed off naturally with the aero instead of dumping it all into the brakes.

That does two things. You're on the gas less, so you burn less fuel. And your brakes transfer less heat into your tires, so they degrade slower too. Same lift, two wins.

Done right you barely lose any time. The goal isn't to go through the corner slower, it's to go through it more efficiently and preserve what you have left on the car.

Your brakes probably aren't broken. Your brake curve is set up wrong, and here's the number to fix it.

I've seen this over and over. People's brakes aren't set up correctly, and because it's not calibrated right, it's really hard for them to be consistent.

Here's the target: your initial hit should land somewhere around 60 to 80 percent of your braking force. Not 100. If you close your eyes and just stomp the pedal, it's maxed out instantly, and that's not how it works. Most real drivers aren't maxing out their brakes unless they're about to crash or hit somebody. They're shooting for that 60 to 80 percent for most corners, and that's really where your lap time comes from.

If you can max it out too easily, you're probably over-braking for a ton of corners without realizing it. If you can't even get close to 80 percent, you're under-braking for a ton of corners. You want that sweet spot.

The second half of this: I used to run my brake pedal really soft, because I wanted it to feel like my daily driver. That's not how race brakes work at all. You want a stiff pedal, so you can actually fine-tune how much you're braking instead of just slamming it.

Four bass shakers on one aluminium rig is still one bass shaker. They cancel each other out.

A lot of people think haptics and motion are going to make them faster. They are not. Haptics are great for immersion, and that is the whole reason to own them, but do not go overkill.

You really only need one bass shaker. I see rigs with two, four, ten haptic devices bolted to them and it does not make sense. They are all vibrating the same aluminium frame, and most of the time they cancel out. So even if you think you are feeling four corners, you are feeling one.

Motion has a different problem, and it is not price. Once you are at a decent level, the car talks to you before the platform does. Every motion system has some delay, even the expensive ones, so what you are being told is something the car did a moment ago and you have already corrected for it.

Think of it like a roller coaster. It is cool because it moves. That is not the same as making you better.

Spend the money on the pedals and the cockpit first. Then buy the fun stuff because it is fun, not because you think it is lap time.

Want to feel the difference before you buy any of it? Academy Sim Racing in Tampa. $25 for 30 minutes Fri and Sat, or $40/hr Sun through Thu. academysim.com

Be honest. When did you last sit in it?

Every rig starts as the best purchase you ever made. Six months later it is a very expensive
coat rack that judges you from across the room.

Ours do not get that luxury. They run every day, they are set up, and somebody else already
paid for the wheel you keep telling yourself you will buy.

Come brush off the rust. Rentals start at $40 at Academy Sim Racing in Tampa.
