THE G8 DESIGNS STORY:
G8 Designs was formed way back in 2013. Initially, the goal was to create a stereo dash kit to replace the horrible factory Blau-junk stereo found in these cars. Adding a modern head unit updates the car and enhances the driving experience.

The factory stereos in these cars have always been way behind in technology, and as years go by, they get worse and worse. Not only

that, the factory stereos are mediocre at best in terms of sound and build quality. They are fraught with design flaws, glitches, and malfunctions. Also, Blaupunkt integrated the AC controls into the radio as a single unit - so to add an aftermarket radio you have to remove the whole unit, losing your AC controls.

Fortunately for all of us, a guy named Mike Folcik owned a G8 too. Way back in 2010, he saw these problems himself. So, he began working on his touchscreen AC controller as an alternate standalone device to control the AC in these cars. Using his AC controller was mandatory because nothing else exists in the whole world to control AC in these particular cars.

By combining our dash kit with Folcik's AC controller, G8 Designs created a new product that lets you put any double-din head unit you like in these cars, and dramatically improving your driving experience! Thus the G8 Designs Dash Kit was born. Over the years, the programming of our controller has constantly been updated and refined to work around all the factory bugs that these cars came with, so it's now 100% compatible with all G8's and Commodore Series 1 cars around the world.

Since that time, G8 Designs has evolved into a unique business - we've expanded our product line, designing exciting new products and custom components & fixes for these cars, solving some of their common issues! G8 Designs does not resell other people's products - we design and make our own products, and you can't get our stuff anywhere else in the world!

DUAL K**B RETROFIT KIT - WHERE ARE WE NOW?
Hey folks, I know it's been awhile since we had an update on this, there just hasn't been a ton of news to report.

As far as the electronics for the new k**b board and the programming, that is pretty much complete. Maybe a tiny code tweak here or there, but it's running very stable and solid.

Because of some of the advanced aspects of the outer fascia design, that's still a work in progress. I've been collaborating with my 3D design guy on the new 3D printed outer fascia on the model for the new design. He's tied up on a couple of other projects currently, but in early August he'll be back and assisting with the model creation.

As many know, injection molded plastic parts, especially parts of this size is hideously expensive, even when sourcing from China. They have very high minimum order requirements so you must invest tens of thousands of dollars into mold tooling and production, and it's just not within the capabilities of anyone but a big corporation with a big bank account. So that method of manufacture isn't viable for us.

For our needs, 3D printing is essential. It will not only allow us to create a thicker, sturdier, more stable part, but it will give us mounting bosses with threaded inserts for mounting circuit boards and easier routing of wiring and mounting of components. We'll now be able to mount the circuit boards to the fascia itself. The fascia will have hidden features for solid mounting and a sturdy feel (no more velcro!).

Not only that, but the latest 3D printers will be able to integrate black plastic filament for the body with a translucent filament so that the Hazards backlight LEDs can light up thru the translucent upper button area, and a red filament for the Hazards triangles. So you can have multiple filament colors printing the whole part in one pass.

To achieve this, we have some technical stuff to sort out first. As soon as our model is fully designed, we'll be printing prototype fascias locally and doing some testing of the multi-filament printing techniques. The fascia must be printed from ABS plastic or a carbon filament for stability in hot car interiors.

SO - thank you all for your patience with us! On any given day, I'm pulled in 10 different directions, and I'm sorry for the delays. But progress IS happening, and when I have more news, I'll report it here. I know all our existing customers are anxious to get this upgrade for their existing kits!

I've often said that if we were a huge corporation with deep bank account, we'd have knocked this out in a few months, but that's just not our situation. These are limited production cars in dwindling numbers, so this is very niche market stuff we're doing.

DUAL K**B RETROFIT KIT - UPDATE
YES we are still moving forward on this project, and I wanted to give everyone our latest news, and explain why we don't have Beta units in the hands of ALL our Beta Testers yet...but soon!

Last week, I visited with 2 separate customers here in Florida who have our existing G8 Designs Dash Kits - these fellows wanted to help us with our Beta Testing and graciously offered their cars as well as their time, patience, and support in that task. Being that they were within a short driving distance, it was a perfect opportunity.

One customer has a GT and the other has a GXP. The GXP is an important one to test in because the GXP's programming of the HVAC module has some slight code differences from the base models and GT models. Even though there aren't many GXP's, we have a number of our units in some of those cars, so this will be a great test bed for the upgrade.

I did the installation work myself on their cars - this was a valuable exercise for me because I've been in the process of shooting photos for and creating our installation instructions to install the Retrofit Kits, which is very important groundwork that MUST be done before we can start putting this hardware in customer's hands.

If customers were just handed this hardware without proper instructions, step by step photos and graphics, they'd simply be lost, or might make mistakes and they'd have a bad experience. That is NOT something we can allow, so doing the proper groundwork is essential.

So, doing this install work myself, walking through the install steps and seeing things from an outside perspective was very helpful. It gives me the chance to see things from the customer or installer's perspective and refine the process.

I learned a few important things I hadn't considered before which will help greatly as I finalize our instructions.

BOTH CUSTOMER UNITS ARE WORKING VERY WELL.
We resolved some connectivity issues, and I made a decision to change one of the circuit board connectors to make installation easier. So, I have some revised connectors on order and will swap those out on ALL our beta units. It's important to do that BEFORE we put these in the hands of customers to save them any difficulty or frustrations.

These two customers are busy putting the new setup through its paces, pressing every function and k**b, and running through all aspects of operation. So far, they haven't found any real programming errors or bugs. Their units, as well as the one in my own car, are all very stable and consistent. THAT'S WHAT WE WANT before we put these in the hands of others!

I have a long list of interested Beta Tester volunteers and only 5 Beta units left, so I'll have to distribute these 5 setups to the testers that we feel will meet the requirements and be the most benefit.

Beta Testers will be contacted as soon as I make the connector swaps on our units and get them ready to ship out.

3D PRINTED OUTER FASCIAS
I'm also making progress on our 3D model for the new fascias, working with my 3D designer guy and refining the design, making some necessary alterations, and will be doing some test prints locally for tweaking and evaluation after we get the model ready.

Also working on methods to create an attractive outer surface without the ugly layer lines found in most 3D prints.

ANOTHER INCREDIBLE FEATURE COMING!
I'll be dropping some more amazing news on yet another innovation we'll be building into this Retrofit Kit very soon! NO OTHER PRODUCT IN THE WORLD HAS THIS and it will resolve a frustrating issue for many G8 owners!

I won't (and can't) say more than that about it until Mike Folcik has it programmed in and working consistently. I'm telling you guys, the man is a genius!

Mike just shipped in 5 Dual K**b boards in addition to the other 2 I already have for our Beta Testers! I'm working now to get these Retrofit kits ready to ship to our testers, and readying the installation instructions and all the other components involved.

LATEST RETROFIT KIT UPDATE!

DUAL K**B RETROFIT KIT - UPDATE
We've been busy guys!

Mike Folcik has spent the last several days putting in a ton of long hours and programming expertise to create our Engine Gauge Display Feature! Normally, Mike is busy with other non-G8 projects, but we got lucky this time!

Long-pressing the left control k**b for 1 sec takes you out of AC control mode and puts you into Engine Gauge Display Mode. You then can rotate the left k**b, and every click takes you to the next page of gauges. First is TEMPS, then ENGINE, then FUEL, then BATTERY.

MAX INDICATORS
See the blue Max indicators on the bands? Those rise with the needle movement and stick at the maximum reading, so you can see how high the gauge went. You can double-tap that particular gauge face on the screen and zero the Max back out, and then it will come back again.

The BATTERY screen not only shows you voltage, but reads the percentage of charge of your battery, which is helpful in diagnosing battery problems, or giving you confidence that you have plenty of charge on your battery!

OIL pressure and OIL temp as well as COOLANT temp and TRANS temp will be quite helpful readings for the performance guys!

And, the TANK gauge shows you how many gallons you have in your 19 gallon tank, not just 1/4 full, 1/2 full, etc.

Since I'm "Beta Tester Level 0", Mike and I have been communicating all week about all this. He's been tweaking the programming, and I've been installing firmware updates and doing real world testing on the road.

We want this to be pretty close to perfect before we send this out to our Level 1 Beta Testers, that's why I've held off on sending any Beta units out yet.

Mike will be back at this next week, and we'll get it all fine tuned from there.

ANOTHER G8 STOCK SPOILER REPAIR
We just shipped out another difficult repair of this customer's SRM spoiler from his GXP that arrived in pieces.

It was a lot of work putting it all back together, but now this customer can retain the originality of his rare GXP, and will have it color-matched at his local paint and body shop.

The time to get your stock spoiler repaired is when it gets loose and wiggly, BEFORE the wind catches it and flies off on a highway somewhere, or it gets knocked off in a car wash.

Our unique repair methods will ensure the spoiler is stronger than it ever was from the factory, and will last the life of the car. Consult with G8 Designs before you lose yours too!
