Why do some cars launch cleanly and settle into a smooth cruise?

For years, Chevrolet shot for one number when matching gearboxes and axles: 9:1.

In the latest George’s Corner, George explains how builders can use the same ratio today when picking an M20, M22, or M23 for street setups.

Start with your axle. Match your gearbox.

Aim for 9:1, and most builds land right where they should.

The Syracuse N-Series Extension introduces a revised housing with added features and clear Syracuse identification.

The extension supports left-hand speedometer drive configurations, offers an optional roller bearing yoke output, and incorporates a relocated breather port for applicable builds, all while fitting the same applications builders expect.

When one of your own takes the podium, you’ve got to shout it out. Huge congrats to Danny Richardson for bringing home 2nd place in American Sedan at the 2025 SCCA Runoffs at Road America!

Danny’s No. 22 Camaro runs a custom 4-speed AutoGear box — built to handle the brutal pace of this class. After taking gold in 2024, he’s back proving what consistency, skill, and solid engineering can do.

We’ve been proud to work alongside Danny and the Richardson Racing crew to fine-tune every detail of that transmission. Watching him fight through that field was something special.

1974 marked the end of an era. GM produced its final factory Muncie 4-speed (the 518), closing a chapter in OEM performance history.

But the Muncie story didn’t stop there. Auto Gear carried the torch — strengthening cases, refining gears, and ensuring the spirit of the Muncie lived on in performance builds for decades to come.

We’ve come a long way since the original Muncie case. This is the Syracuse version—rebuilt from the inside out, not just for strength, but for smart manufacturing.

Both our SuperCase and N-Series designs now feature simplified surfaces with added material in key areas. That means stronger mounting points, cleaner machining, and lower costs passed on to real builders. The webbing’s gone, but the integrity remains—backed by decades of transmission know-how and poured right here in 356T6 aluminum.

Still made in Syracuse. Still shifting hard.
What was the first case you cracked—and why?

By 1967, Auto Gear was showcasing the craftsmanship behind its transmissions — whether on the shop floor or at industry events. This photo captures the meticulous setup of parts that defined our work during the muscle car boom.

The products built then were strong, but the innovations that followed made them legendary.
