It's stuff like this that nickel and dimes you to death on time.
Lazy manufacturers not checking anything they send out the door, likely having this s**t made outside of the US as well. It's a time-killer for shops, and ends up costing the customer in the end.
This customer brought his Rotating Assembly in to be balanced. He purchased this Harmonic Balancer. The manufacturer apparently had a worn-out tap, and you couldn't screw a bolt into any of the accessory pulley bolt holes. It wasn't his fault, and it wasn't our fault. But, it had to be addressed which cost time and money at the end of the day.
It wasn't much time or cost on this specific issue... But multiply that over an entire build. We have seen it in literally every aspect. Aftermarket Connecting Rods sized without ever being torqued, several thousand dollar crankshafts with sizing inconsistency or taper in the journals, or maybe the snout is .001" small.. We have literally received name-brand aluminum performance cylinder heads that were entirely missing 2 out of 4 spark plug holes.
I guess at the end of the day, s**t happens, and being as we build alot of engines we just happen to see more of it. Though the fact remains that it is 100% unacceptable for anything like what I have mentioned above to leave our facility screwed up. Maybe the manufacturers should be held to the same standard.
Happy Tuesday!
