You see it:
- Puff of blue smoke on acceleration
- Oil pooling around the crankcase breather
- Dipstick goes down faster than usual
- Haze under the truck
Most people think: “Eh, old diesel. They smoke.”
Wrong. That’s blow-by. And it tells you everything about your engine’s health.
What is blow-by?
During combustion, pressure builds behind the piston rings. Those rings are supposed to seal it. But when they wear (and they all do), some combustion gas sneaks past—carrying oil mist with it.
A little blow-by? Normal.
A LOT of blow-by? Your rings are shot.
Here’s where it gets expensive:
That oil mist goes into the crankcase. Too much and it:
- Pressurizes the crankcase (blows seals)
- Contaminates the oil (breaks down faster)
- Clogs the breather (more pressure buildup)
- Finds every weak gasket and leaks
You end up with oil EVERYWHERE. Under the truck. On the block. In the pan.
The real problem: Worn rings mean compression is dropping. Your combustion isn’t as efficient. You lose power. You burn more fuel.
Early catch: $2,000-3,000 (ring job, gaskets, seals)
Late catch: $5,000-7,000 (full rebuild, everything’s dirty)
We measure it:
Crankcase pressure test (tells us severity)
Compression test (shows ring condition)
Oil analysis (confirms wear metals in the oil)
You get a real answer: “Your rings are 60% gone. You’ve got 10,000 miles before it gets critical. Here’s your timeline.”
Not a guess. A plan.
