A MAJOR SNOWSTORM TUESDAY- every model you look at says the same thing, this could be an historic storm for the Gulf Coast. The widespread nature of snow accumulations is something we rarely see this far south. Expect this snow event to rival some of the most significant in our history.

There will be some mixing issues in spots as we filter in sleet and freezing rain with the snow. Any liquid rain would only be in southern areas at the coast. As the storm cranks up through the day Tuesday, a complete transition to heavy snow is possible. Where we get that complete changeover, the banding of snow will be heavy. It’s in these locations where snow accumulations over 6” are possible, it would not be shocking to see a few 8-10” totals.

With that being said, residents need to be prepared. Freezing temperatures in advance of the winter storm will set the stage for a rapid deterioration of our interstate system and roadways. Expect this to occur in the early morning hours of Tuesday. Please be in your safe spot for the duration of the storm by then. Travel will become impossible from Tuesday through most of Wednesday - I wouldn’t expect improvement on the roads until Thursday at the earliest.

As snow accumulates, it can get heavy leading to sagging power lines and falling branches. Please watch for this around your home! It could lead to power outages as well.

Once we lay a snowpack, those spots will have a VERY frigid night Tuesday night into Wednesday. Lows in the teens are likely which is an automatic pipe freeze.
