Here’s the reason this truck is still on jack stands. I’ve racked my brain for too long and lost sleep trying to decide what I want to do about this transmission project. I thought I knew then I started 2nd guessing everything… mainly because I’m in a better position to do something better than before, even selling this truck and upgrading to a new truck if I wanted to. I’ve weighed the pros and cons to every possibility and I’m just stuck so I want to know what you’d do in this scenario. The scenario is I want to get into some things that will require frequent light towing and infrequent heavy towing.
In no particular order other than option 1 being what I was going to do.
#1. Replace the A518 with a rebuilt unit with a new stock level converter, get it drivable again and sell the truck because I’m in a position for something newer. Easiest and cheapest way to get it on the road again.
#2. Keep the truck. Replace the A518 with a rebuilt unit and a high performance Goerend converter, focus on keeping everything cool, turn the injection pump up some with supporting mods, maybe some injectors and send it. Easy to do, more money, checks more boxes in the pros department but still could fail with heavy abuse.
#3. Keep the truck, keep it automatic but go all in on a Loganbuilt or equivalent 47RH full manual valve body with lockup and overdrive on toggle switches. Go bigger turbo and all of the supporting fuel mods. Easy to do, a whole lot more money invested but should be bulletproof at that point.
#4. Manual swap it. NV4500, NV5600 or G56 depending on how much money and time I want to throw at it. More work, more time and more money the newer unit you pick. Way more reliable and could tow what I need to tow.
New trucks are great, all the new luxuries, a warranty and can tow anything you want, but have expensive monthly notes, they’re problematic and sometimes a headache to deal with just like older trucks which is another argument for another day. At least I can work on the older ones and no monthly note.
Well?
