A full circle river moment for Southern Devall’s Capt. Pete Ciaramitaro.

Nearly 52 years after making his very first trip on the river as a 17-year-old deckhand aboard the Laura Elizabeth, Capt. Pete recently returned to Greenville to visit the vessel one final time before her decommissioning.

Standing beneath the very same name sign where his original photo was taken decades ago, Capt. Pete reflected on the boat where his river career first began — and where he first learned to steer.
Built in Greenville in 1965, the Laura Elizabeth holds a special place in maritime history and in Capt. Pete’s life.

As Capt. Pete prepares to retire from Southern Devall on July 31, his love for the river remains as strong as ever. In August, he’ll once again captain the legendary MV Mississippi, the largest towboat in the world, before taking a well-deserved cruise vacation with his wife.
