We had this really nice 1970 Challenger 340 convertible in this week for some maintenance. This is a rare car 1 of 178 being an A66 code non- R/T with the 340 engine package and automatic and a great color combo. Besides the power top and 340 with automatic, there aren’t many other options except Rallye dash and 14” Rallye wheels. The 340 is very strong and it drives great. Routine oil change, l**e, and it’s ready to go home but it will be back soon for tires as they are 12 years old and unsafe for highway use! Show car owners check your tires!!!

Pictures of beautiful cars are fun but I’m going to talk about how things go with old cars when it’s not so glamorous. Working on this 1964 GTO today that had an accident and we’re replacing the fender (with a good used one we had to get from California and that’s a whole other story). The lower fender attaches to the rocker panel via a cage nut inside the rocker and, of course, somebody left me the gift of what looked like a rusted broken bolt, but was actually some hack’s broken off thread tap. So instead of a 15 minute fit, it took nearly an hour to slice open the rocker, remove the cage nut, remove the broken tap and repair the threads, put the cage nut back in the rocker and weld it back up. At the end it wasn’t discouraging to lose the time, it was great to know it’s repaired properly. Nevertheless, this is how things go with 60 year-old cars. Every. Day. Not always glamorous and also why keeping a schedule is nearly impossible. Unfortunately it’s also why unqualified people make shoddy repair attempts. Lots more conversations here, but if you want to own and work on old things, be patient!

We like to handle everything with these builds in house, but convertible tops and custom stitched upholstery are a niche unto themselves, so we dropped our ‘59 Corvette project off with the very capable folks at Innerworx interiors in Boynton Beach for the new top and interior. Looking forward to seeing it done soon!

In 1977 only, Pontiac made about 1500 Lemans models with this Can Am option. They were all Cameo White with the red and orange graphics and a shaker hood on top of the 400 Trans Am engine. The snowflake Trans Am wheels were an option from the standard Rallye IIs. The original interior was solid white but this one has custom seat covers to match the graphics. With 87k miles on the clock, we freshened the engine with cylinder head rebuild and new timing set and gaskets throughout as well as a carb rebuild and new engine paint and detail. A few other items along with correcting the speedometer drive inside the transmission and today it’s going home. It drives great cruising with the cold AC! #1977
